After using the PC for several hours it began slowing measureably including the mouse, sound and general slow operation running XP Pro. I opened the task manager and it showed that DLLHOST.EXE was using 92% of cpu. I closed DLLHOST and the system went back to normal operation and didn't seem to effect the operation afterwards.
What is the purpose of DLLHOST, is it necessary for operation?

Most of the URLs below are for Win2K, which seems to have much of the same problems you are having.

Thanks Bovon,
with your links I was able to identify the problem, something for everyone to be aware of.
First of all I had AVG on my XP Pro but hadn't updated for a couple of weeks. I updated AVG anti-virus and it immediately IDENTIFIED THE dllhost as a WORM virus (2). I removed them with AVG and now the system flies and DLLHOST not even present in Task Manager.

too many folks think their AV "takes care of itself" - it doesn't - you need to update and run it often - hopefully everyone will make note?!
