I was jus wondering what you guy thought he was going to buy a dell but ifigured id save him some money. He was looking a t a computer that would last a while. Was it a good idea to steer him away from the p4 or should it be just as upradeable as the athlon. this system makes me very jealous. I am buying everything from newegg except the os. Is everything compatible, price ok, products ok.

spend a few extra bucks and get a real modem.

yeah a hardware modem. I usually get the creative modem blaster's. They go for less than $40. Although nowadays it's all about broadband.

A few things I have personally learned about building computers for people...

1) GET PAID IN ADVANCE. I don't even want to talk about how this one came to me. Doesn't matter who it is (your friend, your neighbor, your mom http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif ), get paid in advance.
2) Congratulations! You are now their tech support for problems, installs (both hardware and software), upgrades and anything else! Of course, you could charge them for the time that you put in repairing it (like they would have to do otherwise), but you might feel bad if they are a friend or family.
3) If someone else using the computer screws it up (downloads a virus, installs something wrong, blah blah blah), you may be blamed for the problem. Refer to #2.

(puts bitter past aside) Anyway http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif... Your components look good, but are you using an integrated motherboard? I'm not familiar with that chipset, and I don't see a video card listed anywhere. If you're going all out on everything else, don't skimp on the video card. If anything, skimp on something else, and splurge on the video card, because it makes the biggest difference in gaming performance (if that's what the computer is being used for). And make sure he/she knows what that CAK38 sounds like, because it could be a rude awakening! If you don't need the front panel audio controls, and you don't need the games, the Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 value gives the same audio performance as platinum for less $$$.

Otherwise, everything looks good. Very good.

I agree with the above->

" 2) Congratulations! You are now their tech support for problems, installs (both hardware and software)"

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER build a computer for someone who has never run a Windows 95/98 machine before.

You WILL teach them everyting about how to operate the thing,

Lots of guys here have quit building for people because of this very problem.

The NEW user is confused, at the least, heck Windows was designed to be confusing.

It will become your responsibilty to teach them how to run it, for FREE.

you have now been Warned

uh, guys, i think he's already bought it. everything looks fine, i think it'll work. you should have bought the RAM at www.crucial.com/webpromo. (http://www.crucial.com/webpromo.) it would have been better quality, and been only about 47.18 a stick, plus tax in some states, free shipping. mine in Illinois would have been about $105. anyway, where is the video card?? i don't see it? where is it??? okay anyway, i'd like to say one thing. you go and buy all the great stuff, the case, the PS, the processor, but then you run the cheapest of everything else you can find?? what's the deal? if your going to build a system that will push 2000, you might as well make it last long. if you were build a budget PC, then i could see that.

Never mind free tech support, I built one for a family member (bro-in-law) I didnt realize i was also throwing in 24 hour tech support "on the house"
Dont get me wrong, he is family and I dont mind that much, but its like im leasing him my pc for free. Hardware goes bad? "I dont know who to call or what to do, can you help me?" aye yaye yaye

PS. see szech #1

I built a pc for my wifes friend once.....once.
Somehow she decided she couldnt really afford to pay me all at once.
Looks like I bought my self another PC.
Now she has the money and I dont want to sell it now http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I'd sell it then build something better. Cpu prices just keep on falling.

looks similar to omy setup. i bought my lian-li case from newegg as well. i use the a7a266 and a 1.3 athlon. but a few things i really hated was...

the athlon cpu gets so hot. i had to buy two different fans. and finally i stuck with the thermalengine. with a delta 60mm(that sucka is soooooo loud. my mind is being drowned out in white noise)

i heard complications about the a7a266 and using two ddr dims. something about doing the dipswitches correctly (which myself i did not solve)

but looking good there...

oh yeah. one other note. hehe=)

i bought my IBM (DESKSTAR) 75.0GB EIDE 8.5MS 7200RPM 75GXP DTLA-307075 (oem) from www.gogocity.com (http://www.gogocity.com) for $215

i like these drives alot. they seem fine.

Sorry about the video card i didnot post it beecause i allready have it. It is a Elsa Geforce 3 64meg tv-out And the monitor is a 19" he already has. As for tech support i dont think he will need it he is really pretty smart when it comes to software but hardware is a different thing. i am going to just give him a backup disk and tell him if he cant fix something thats not hardware use the disk. The sound card and modem will stay because he has cable and he plays with music alot so i guess he will enjoy having the front face. Thanks for all the help.
