I looked at the network settings and connections on a friends HP notebook , who's planning to add a Linksys router to share cable modem access (RR) with his desktop via ethernet. Simple enough for me I suppose. The notebook has an ethernet jack, phone jack, 1394 FW jack and USB .
Both pc's have XP. Home on the notebook, pro on the desktop.
In the notebook's network connections were the Dialup Modem, (1)WAN Connection, (1)Internet Connection listed as his Realtek NIC, (1)1394 connection, and a Bridge (?) . The WAN connection has "Obtain IP Auto","DHCP enabled" . The Realtek has a 192.xxx.xxx.xxx ip. Can't remember the 1394 or Bridge settings.
I know the desktop's nic settings are set ok, but I'm concerned about the notebooks network settings. Especially the Bridge . I'm guessing its for FW.
I need advice if he needs to correct anything before connecting the router. I'm guessing he needs to run XP's network setup wizard on the notebook after the router is connected, then manually set the router for auto Ip and DHCP enabled.

That's all fine. The bridge is for 1394 to Ethernet. You can ignore it, but I would remove it and check the properties for each device to prevent it coming back.
