It's amazing but here I am connecting via my 5 1/2-year-old's computer with a freebie 14400 USR Sportster somebody just gave me and it is actually not that bad!

Reminds me of one of my old access telephone numbers which had a best connection of 21,700 but it seemed like it was actually quicker than my normal 46,666.

Don't believe always in numbers you see.
Look at what you see.
Computers sometimes lying too.

I have heard that there is a small modification for the USR 14.4 modems that makes them 16.8 - this modification was quite popular once, however, I don't know what it is, but you shouldn't have problems finding this on the net.

I have another use for a 14.4k modem, if you are talking to someone, and you have the modem plugged in, you an tape record the entire conversation(asuming it is legal where you are) as a WAV file, and modify it for fun!

just a thought but even your V90 may not work as fast as your 14400 just depends on the line quality you are connected at, we are a fair few miles out from the exchange with a copper wire connection at the exchange ( not fibre optic) so some days we may only get 69 bits a second connection and thats slow make a snack put, coffee on, all while waiting for Sysopt.com to load intro page.

I do get excelent connection speed with my 56K-flex /V90s 45000 - 49000 range and pages come up snappy, somewhat less with my 33.6 but okay - what surprizes me is that the 14400 keeps right up with the 33.6 - except on larger downloads...but for general surfing and the BBS it's fine.

Just a thought but your 14400 must be some years old probably made to a better quality control, bit like a modern car trying to take on a 59 Oldsmobile head on in a crash sit. it will probably be running longer in the end if the net carries on giving it the support for that speed.
