why did ATI stopped the production of the Radeon 9500np/pro?
is it because of the softmod?

the 9500 series was stopped because it was too expensive for them and they werent making a lot of profit.

the result is the 9600 pro, its cheaper for them to make and they get a lot more profit, and it also uses its pipelines more efficiently

Yeah, expense, the 9600 Pro is a much cheaper card to make and is just about equal in performance to the 9500 Pro. Also they clamped down pretty quick on the soft-modding of cards, though it still can be done to many of their remaining products *cough - radeon 9800np - cough*

9500 used the same expensive core chip as the 9700 series, the R300. Stepping down from 9700pro over 9700, 9500pro and 9500, it was just speed- and functionality-binning of an identical "performance class" part.

Now that the 9700 is no more, replaced by R350 aka Radeon 9800, and ATi have made a separate midrange performance part again (the RV350 aka Radeon 9600), this is all history.
