I have built a system for a friend - nothing special, but inexpensive - $700 including monitor - and I am looking for a set of speakers to complement it, preferably under $50.
Here are the specs
Duron 800
Sis 730 chipset - Integrated Video, Audio, Ethernet.
WD 7200rpm 30 GB
12x DVD
8x4x32 CDRW
56k Modem riser
17" Dynaflat Samsung 753df .20 Dp
Its no powerhouse... but its extremely stable and great for business and multimedia use.

Yamaha Computer Powered Speakers - Black

The sub may be Black or White, the "enclosure color" says NONE ?
If that don't bother you, get um.
I've sold a couple of pairs like this and get rave reviews from customers.

I don't know about the subwoofer, but I do have a pair of those Yamahas and they are very good for doing the uppers. Not tinny sounding like a lot of sattelites are.

Alright - those will do nicely... and they don't look bad either (like similarly priced models do) Thanks!

Check out the Labtec Pulse-424 3 piece system. A friend of mine just picked these up and they sound GREAT!. Retail is $50, but they can usually be had for $40 or so.
The Pulse-424 features home theater styling and a breakthrough subwoofer design unlike any other multimedia speaker system. Inside, the primary driver and a two-chamber acoustic system deliver twice the bass energy of a conventional design. Coupled with an 8" Pressure Driver on the face of the subwoofer, the system goes lower, plays louder and dramatically reduces distortion while producing crystal clear high and mid-range sound from the satellites.
“For $50, you absolutely can’t beat the Pulse-424…our collective jaws are still on the ground” -- PC Gamer
“For the money, the Pulse are the best 2.1 speakers we’ve ever tested…The sub is easily the most impressive unit we’ve ever heard in a sub-$200 speaker system” -- Max PC
