I've priced out some decent UPS models. Belkin (kinda wimpy), APC, others. Heck, I've even used the APC online calculator, spec'd to 300W draw (thinking of my main XP 1800+ machine here). So far, my MINIMUM appears to be a Back UPS Pro 650 for at least 15 minutes of run-time. Enough time to dash to the comp, give it the ALt-F4 treatment, and hope nothing needs to be end-tasked (this IS MS we're talking about...). However, the best price I can get (in CDN dollars) is about 370.00 + taxes and shipping from NCIX.com. Decent, but that's ONE computer. I actually run 5 at the moment. The second-fastest machine is a laptop (1.8 GHz), and the others are, well, expendable (2 towers and an older laptop).

So, what UPS's have you used/use/plan to use? Home or business environment? Both? Thoughts? Likes/dislikes?

Ontario's 3rd world power grid scares me. The "unofficial" word was that we came within 1,000 megawatts of blacking out yesterday. It sounds like a lot, but in reality, it's not much at all.

My first house I purchase will receive a heavy investment in solar and possibly wind power... but that's down the road.

What can I do in my meager apartment to save my **** NOW!

Thanks guys.

I haven't been around much... things are downright nuclear here at the office lately. Add in the blackout... and well, it's a nightmare.

Hope to see some good answers!

great price :) how do these compare to the 40 dollar APC UPSs?

That one can run a washing machine for 5 minutes. Let's see what a $40 unit can do. :p It weighs about 40lbs too. It's huge.

That unit has voltage regulation along with battery backup. It boosts sags and suppresses surges in real-time.

Thanks BPB and everyone else who contributed!

You'll never guess what I found in one of the lesser-used offices at work: an unused APC Back-UPS Pro 1400! :x

Time to go see if there is a plan to use it elsewhere, word from my immediate super is that the battery is pooched. Replacements from APC directly are 200+tx and shipping. Mmmm.

That's a good one! You don't have to get a battery from them though:
