I bought a SoA Gigabyte GA-7DX motherbaord from a PC fair. It turned out to be an engineering sample and instead of DIP switches to select the CPU multiplier and FSB it had a BIOS which allowed this to be done from the BIOS (when booted, it would display a full screen logo showing the letters NEC - as in the computer/electronics company).

Anyway I flashed the BIOS with the latest update from the Gigabyte website and the new BIOS works fine but does not let me select the CPU Clock/multiplier speed as before, although the FSB speed can still be changed in 1MHz incremets.

The CPU I have (1800XP) is unlocked and now runs at its default multiplier, whereas before I had it running as a 2100XP using a higher multiplier.

Anyone know where I can get a BIOS for the GA-7DX that allows the multiplier to be changed (even if its a hacked BIOS) as I backed up my original BIOS but have lost the backup.

Thanks.

Try pressing Ctrl+F1 at the main screen - this provides more options on Gigabyte boards. Failing that, I think I found the original NEC BIOS here (http://help.nec-computers.com/au/itemnr/NECBIOS05750100.asp). Hope that helps.

Never flash the BIOS with a different version/type than what is installed. An engineering sample or an OEM version is NOT that same as a production version and the BIOS may not be compatible.

This is a quick way to turn a working PC into a desk paperweight.

They've already done that though and it was fine. I agree that it's generally not a good idea though... Bad BIOS flashes suck
