Hi, folks.

I was wondering if you'd help me help a friend?

This gentlemen just bought a brand new computer running Windows XP and I assume the latest version of Outlook Express. He'd like to transfer his email and address book, etc. from his old computer, running Win 98SE and Outlook Express 5 to the new and has asked me to help.

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about Outlook Express, and so we have the old blind leading the blind situation here.

I'm doing some research online, but thought I'd come here and ask all of you.

Is there some easy way to do this? I know with plain old Outlook, you can just transfer the outlook.pst file. Is there a similiar file for Express?

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

-Mr. Underhill (who often forgets what forum he's on...)

Use the same technique to export messages.

The way I transfer the mail is to change the mail store folder so all the .dbx files are easy to find.

I create a new folder named "mail" in the root of C:, then I move all my mail to it, (tools>options>maintenance>store folder and choose the new folder you've made) You've got to close OE and reopen it for the move to complete.

Now copy the store folder to the new machine and put it in the root of C:. (actually anywhere works, I put mine in the root of D so I don't lose anything when I restore a ghost image of the OS) You also might want to make a second copy in case anything goes wrong.

Change the store folder of the new OE and point it to the folder full of mail you've just placed in the root of C. You'll get a message similar to "there's already mail in the folder, Do you want to keep it?" Click "yes" and follow the instructions.

That transfers the mail without exporting or importing anything.

Edit: If you move the folder by burning it to CD, you'll have to remove the "read only" property after you've put it on the new machine. Otherwise OE can't deal with it.

Thanks, DVOM. I'll pass that along as well.

hey bushpilot - thanks for all the references

probably better off sharing your expertise when the need arises, not after Bill's already given Mr. Underhill his answer :t

I'm just wondering why he didn't link to them. :p

That's because I'm still trying to find the Windows<for you know who> book that you recommended when I first joined the forum obviously asking stupid questions.

As to why I didn't post sooner it was because no one who actually shared their ideas and thoughts on the forum solved any of my problems. I did a lot of research over the last week or so to come up with my latest postings.

I admit that I'm not a computer guru such as yourselves but if the forum is only for experts just ask me to leave and I will resign! How many months did you crawl as a baby before you walked?

No one wants anyone to resign, but I won't be made to feel guilty for suggesting that basic Windows problems be researched elsewhere.

The sign on the door says System Optimization - not the Video Professor. ;)

I thought it said Aps and Operating systems. Please teach me how to link postings together as you suggested :)

Go the the thread you want to link to and copy the address. Return to your new thread and paste it into the body of the message. Feel free to open more than one window.

If you already have a page with the link, you can right-click it and select "Copy shortcut". Once again, simply paste it in.

Thanx....you senior members really do have a lot of knowledge to pass on to us juniors.

A university professor once told me that there is no such thing as a stupid question only stupid answers.

I appreciate your help and guidance.
