SPDIF connection

Hi,
I have a speedy 24x USdrive(cough,cough) which has a SPDIF connector and so does my integrated sound (hag,cough). Question is whether connecting the two would give me audio output from music cd instead of the usual 3wire analogue wire? The reason is to save the 3pin connector from the sound "card" for connecting with the voice modem.

Sure. I've currently got my Aopen 40x connected to my SBLive using the SPDIF connector. Don't notice any difference in performance or sound quality, but it works fine just the same.
