Bought a really nice Intel board (P4+845G chipset) only to find that it will not run Windows 98 First Edition correctly. Runs 98SE and higher fine. There are chipset drivers available for all systems except 98FE.

So, quite apart from why I want to run 98FE, can anyone give me some examples of boards that will run the first edition, either with or without chipset drivers. Asus, Intel, or anything.

What's the best and latest board that will run Win98FE?
Would prefer a P4 board with AGP slot but at this point would take a look at whatever is suggested.

Only new current products please. I may have to look at older boards later on.

Thanks!

Win98FE will never run smoothly on a P4 board without all of the drivers loaded.

Update to Win2k, XP, or Linux for better hardware support.

Check ebay.com for deals on the OS.

Thanks for the reply.

Are you saying, for sure, there are no P4 boards that can run the first edition of Windows 98?

How about new boards with PIII CPUs (if they can be found in stock) or even some of the faster Celeron boards?

Will any of those do the job?

I didn't say that they won't work, just that if there are no drivers for Win98FE then it will not properly support the OS.

Generally old OS's will run on old hardware and not the other way around.

Yeah...

Just did a quick check of all current products from Intel and Asus and all of them run only 98SE or higher.
