Anyone got any figures for maximum operating temperatures for average 5400 and 7200rpm drives? Just a ballpark figure would do. Thanks.

Most IDE HDDs operate at between 30°C and 40°C. I'm sure that they can tolerate 50, but drives vary. It's been said that the reason that IBM's 60 and 70GXPs failed so often was due to temperature intolerance. Rocketmech 08-17-2003, 11:58 AM I used to check the manuf's technical spec's, for example : http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=699&p_created=1037217622 The info is listed in the Enviromenal Specs. But as a rule I think a HDD's temp should'nt rise above the cpu temp for obvious reasons . Looking at a few of the WD temps, 55c appears to be max. operating temps for 5400/7200 drives. fishybawb 08-17-2003, 04:16 PM Thanks guys. Which will it be? Nitpicker... ;) I've got a 5400rpm Maxtor that regulary reaches 50C with moderate use, some 5 degrees higher than the CPU runs at idle. Just wondering if I should be worried, that's all. I had a "DeathStar" that packed in, and it did run very warm too... thefossil 08-18-2003, 05:57 AM I used [B] Scotch® tape [B] to lower my hard drive temp by 4ºF!
