Currently have a Maxtor 13.6 gig UDMA66 7200rpm HD. My brother's HD was damaged during a Thunderstorm...Powersurge...toasted it. He wants to purchase mine. So, I was looking into this:20 GB Western Digital ATA-100. I am not much into huge HD's , so I thought this might be a good upgrade. It's priced at $105.00 at a local PC store. They also have a 30GB for $15.00 more. Any suggestions......
Thanks,
Sweeper

For just the $15 more I'd go for the 30GB, it's worth it.

The 20GB WD is a good drive, but you can do better on price. ComputerGate http://www.computergate.com/cgi-bin/start has this drive for $83. So $10 shipping is still $93.

Spartan Technologies http://www.spartantech.com/ has this drive for $86. They are located in Elk Grove Village, IL. I order a great deal of my parts from them. Not the cheapest, but excellent service and quality parts.

Best Buy in today's paper has a 40 gig Maxtor HD for $140 with a $25 gift card back. The 40 gig Maxtor that I bought several months ago was actually a 45 gig drive.

By the way I have always been a WD guy and that was my first Maxtor. I am very pleased with it. I had to call their tech support concerning the ATA\100 card that I got with it. Two calls and I got thru both times in under 2 minutes and received good friendly service.

Well, I needed one today. I sold my HD to my brother so he could get his machine back up and running. I went ahead and got the 20 gig. I had some cash and he bought mine so I had roughly the amount for the 20 gig. Not a bad drive. Very quiet. Much more than the Maxtor. Although I really haven't seen much performance gain from the ATA100. Any benchmarks I could use to check it out with?

Thanks, for the input.

A good article about the almost negligable performance difference between ATA66 and ATA100.

Why not to try a IBM 60GXP 40G 7200 for $108 + 9 (S&H) at newegg.com. All reviews gave 5/5 to this drive

Another solid hard drive deal is the Maxtor 30 gig 7200 rpm drive from Staples. It is $119.95 but there is a $20 off $100 coupon on techbargains.com, which brings the price down to $99.95. I have one and it is very fast and quiet. I have not had the best luck with Western Digital drives, although can personally attest to their very good RMA program (wink, nudge, wink)
