Please Read this link If you have purchased an Asus Mainboard, if you are concerned about the validity of your hardware, contact their tech support staff if possible and ask them how to verify.

http://www.asus.com/support/english/techref/identify/index.aspx

Someone else brought this to my attention and I thought I'd pass it along. Its not necessarily limited to Asus either, apparently Vantec has been having similar problems with hardware-pirating and facsimiles of the real-deal.

Keep your eyes peeled folks, keep the serial numbres for your hardware handy if it misbehaves, it may be a fake.

My cousin supports Asus motherboards and I think I should warn him about the bad news.

Thanks for the info!

i dunno if this piracy stuff is there in US but its more seen in certain Asian countries like India and China. Since Asus boards are quiet expensive in these regions , end users are really attracted to the prices offered on these fakes(they only look at the packaging, when they c Asus label and the low price, they just grab it).You usually get a 1 year warranty compared to 3 years that Asus provides and then you get immediate replacements from the vendors (who are least concerned abt what they sell).

Newegg Deals direct with Asus, called 'Block Purchasing' if I remember correctly.

So fear not Newegg fans, they will always be legit :t

That is how they buy all their stuff, if they didn't buy direct, you'd be paying more, even with just one middleman.

On the other hand, I only heard that the fake electronic stuff also appear in Taiwan. But Singapore! I never heard of. Anyway, our people are big spenders in computer spare parts. One of them is my cousin!

I bought from eBay yesterday and got a "broken" 8rda+ for £15. Seeing as it's in the computer I'm posting from now, I'd say he didn't check it out too thoroughly :D

I saw a couple of pirated socket-7 boards when I lived in the Middle East - some of them were *really* convincing. Apart from the obvious quality differences, what kind of performance deficit could you expect from one of these boards? Do they use pirated chipsets too?

I assume that you're home with family. Enjoy! :t

I thought software piracy is common! Now hardware piracy is also common. One of my army friends (a US permanent resident) told me he can find a lot of pirated computer hardware in Chicago. I was shocked immediately because the US is place where piracy is unacceptable.

Chicago is where Al Capone made his name. No surprise there!

We have criminals too. :(

At least, the piracy in the States is not that bad compared to other countries.

Who does the RIAA think they're kidding, out of curiousity?

They'd have to shut down the internet altogether to get their way. This will all end up being about as anti-successful as 'Grey-Day'

Blah :D

I've always found it funny how we don't mind ripping off other peoples stuff but get real shirty when it's our own. But on the other hand, I got a genuine Rolex watch, (well five for a tenner) from Turkey that really impressed the workmates I can tell you, only managed to wear mine once before the battery went dead though, but did what I wanted it too.:t

If it sounds too good to be true, watch out! You usually (not always) get what you pay for.
I am speaking from experience. Once bought a VCR cheap (cheap is relative..at the time VCRs WERE NOT CHEAP) I ended up with a box of bricks. Live and learn (I leaned my lesson to this day!:t
