Whattup yall
I had my heart set on getting a new WRX, especially after they chucked those bug eyes on the front. Test drove it a bunch of times and it felt pretty solid all around.
Then all of a sudden I started looking at the GTI. I have a Jetta with the 6cyl now and love the car to death. Its gonna be tough giving up the poor girl. She's gonna be turning 200K soon. As a side note, my instrument cluster just went, so now I have to throw a new one in....oh well, not gonna see the 200000 across the odometer now.
At any rate, I'm gonna be hitting the dealerships at the end of this year pretty hard and I want to get it right. Its gonna be my first "new" car purchase from a dealership.
Just looking for suggestions and comments for either. :t

Hehe, VW, only thing I like of theirs is the Bug and the Bus.
Aside that, I think I'd stick to trying to have my 2002 Mitsu. Galant VR-4 Twin-Turbo imported from New Zealand :D

As we all know, i love the WRX, however i also love the Golf too (coem from a long line of VW drivers)
If i were you and you can get hold of the WRX 22B Sti, the older Impreza, take that, it looks just soo much nicer than the new WRX, which IMO they've dumbed down the looks of.
I think i would still take the WRX over the Golf like, but it depends what you wanna do, if you wanna mod the car up, body kit it up and change the components aroudn in true boy racer hobbyist fashion then the Golf's probably the better of the two.
Personally though my love of all things Impreza draws me back to the Scooby as the car of choice every time

the Scooby WRX looks the dogs bo***cks, I love the look of the new one. I'm not keen on the STI version because it's a bit obvious however.
Do you have kids? Why are you wanting a Golf GTI (surprising when you said GTI it could mean anything....) or a Scooby Doo WRX (or did you mean the Scoda WRX? ;)), for the same amount of money you could look at Nissan 350Z's, Chrysler Crossfire (Merc for pennies), a second hand Honda NSX , Porsche Boxster (it's about to be replaced), Old 911, Nissan Skyline R33... Hmm to have £25k to spend on a car
I'm thinking of getting a Audi A4 or a Mitsubishi Galant (strangely the 2.0 V6 24V GLSi is cheaper to insure than the 1.8 GLSi, it's got more letters so it's got to be better :p )

Thanks for the replies guys.
On one hand, most of my Dad's side of the familiar (which include a couple racers) have sworn on German engineering. My '95 JettaVR6 is simply awesome. Reliable, plenty of power, nimble, great handling, etc. The only thing I have heard is that the newer VWs are coming out less reliable than older production cars.
I like the 350z, that's a great car. Great performane for the price. But, when looking at their packages, the only setup below $30K (US) is their base model with cloth and no upgraded systems.
Even the WRX has got me a little hesitant b/c of the price. At $26-$28(US) I only need a couple more thousand and I can pick up a new 330ix.
I don't know. Both the WRX and Golf GTI ( ;) ) are great cars I think. Another thing I was curious with was the actual end of shaft horsepower of the WRX. They tote on about 220hp or so out of that 4cyl, but push that through an AWD setup and I'm afraid you dip well below 200hp, imo.
Bigjakkstaffa

i thought the WRX was about 260Bhp?
Either way though one of the criticisms levelled at it is that though quick it lacks high end speed in comparison to the Skyline etc. Now im no expert here at all, but would it not be possible to 'tinker' with turbo's and the like to retain if nto improve acceleration, but increase top end grunt. Like i say, i dunno, im no mechanic (hell, i only JUST got my provisional license), but im sure it must be possible some how

I recently saw an S4 on the road a couple weeks ago. That is a sweet car. My dad came across one at a dealer auction recently as well. It was a steal as I remember for what it went for.

My buddy is the proud new owner of a WRX. Fantastic ride, unbelievable cornering and acceleration.
The second day he had a it a giant stress crack spread across the windshield, driver's side to passenger side.
The dealer said they wouldn't replace it as it was a maintenance item... after 150kms? Mmm hmm.
Great car, dodgy windshields. I had a Jetta for years and a Fox before that, never had nothing like that happen to either.
Technically I'd say go for the Subaru, back in the real world I'd say farfignugen thyself young NJE guy.

Insurance on Four-Cylinder Imports is generally higher than a V6 or V8 arrangement, due to the fact their used less for 'modification', most mods available for the galant are for the I4 flavor, the V6 is also more efficient in a power-to-weight ratio way.
Particularly, aside minor adjustments, the 4G64 and 4G63 are the same. Good dependable cars, so long as you don't buy one (like we did) from a woman driver.
Trust me, unless they eat-breath-drive-sleep cars, it'll be in really REALLY bad shape.
Still angst they don't sell the VR outfit for American Galants, think it has something to do with government regulation, ohwell.
Audi A4's a good car too, not as good as an Audi TT in my opinion though
:D

get the wrx , the gti is changing model soon so not worth it
but if your looking for a fast car get the neon srt4 only 20K
its cheap interior though but worth the money
the mods are cheap too for 400 bucks u will get from 215Hp to 240 Hp

My dad's mate had an Audi TT for a few months but got rid because he was gettign annoyed with it, apparently above 90Mph the wind starts getting into the cabin and the car starts shaking a hell of a lot, and lets just say this fellas the sort who does in excess of 90 a fair bit ;)

Just found this article yesterday...it was an interesting comparison. The Golf GTI R32 (or 332 in the States) isn't hitting dealerships until beginning of '04 according to the local VW group.
Car Comparison (http://features.evolutionm.net/article/lanevo/26)
One of the test drives on the WRX I noticed a severe clunking noise when shifting at speed. Maybe it was just the overused demo model or something. But, it was pretty obvious. The salesman didn't have a clue, but he was one of the more "mechanical savvy" people I've been able to talk with at dealerships.

My dad keeps grumbling that he wants to swap out 1.8 litre Passat for a 1.8TDi, he's been big on VW's for as long as i can remember (i dont recall us ever having anythign other than VW). I must say that the new VW W12 looks pretty stunning

Theres a lot of debate about which is better the Lancer or the Scooby Doo Impreza, it seems theres little really between em from what ive read other than the WRX being marginally nippier, in the end i reckon it comes down to looks and the Scooby is just bootiful (though the Evo 6 is quite nice too)

Just found this at a VW dealership near where I live.
The stats are Here (http://vw.flemington.com/servlets/webSearch?vehicleid=20417960&invdid=20746&url=vw.flemington.com)
Asking 17.9K(US)...which I am sure I can haggle with a little. Looked pretty clean, but couldn't get inside with them closed today. Maybe later in the week. The R32 is looking to be 27K(US) or so, which I think is a HUGE difference from this. Not bad deal I think, especially if I can get them down a 1K or so.

That VW isn't going to get made - they are worried about it encroching on the Veyron & aren't sure about how upmarket they can take the VW badge :(
Still, have you seen the Alfra Romeo Brera? Duck me, thats one gorgeous, evil looking beast. It's going into production as well, labelled as a Maserati V8. I soooooo want one.

As for Lancer v Scooby Doo. The cars are almost identical in speed, cornering ability... the only difference been the looks. The Scooby has become almost acceptable, the Lancer looks far too boy-racer-ish.
My brother-in-law's mate works in a Mit. garage and has to replace clutches on Lancers regulary, they are only rated for 3 fast (proper fast, i.e. 0-60 time fast) starts before the die and Mit. will will only replace 3 on warranty
Still, 0-60-0 in 6seconds or something. Whoosh.

Yup, thats all its down to, personal preference, IMO the 22B Sti is simply drop dead, followed in close second by the WRX (it's just a bit too subtle looking) and then the Evo VI, both are excellent cars though and (if i actually had any money...or could drive yet...hey im making progress), i wouldnt pass up the opportunity on either of em

Ferrari 360 sucks eggs and then blows them back out in a soggy swuishy mess.
It's looks generic, sounds like a fly in a bottle and is a Ferrari. The Stratdale is a little better but still, it's a Ferrari.
If I were to pay that sort of money it would be a Vanquish or DB9 (yum yum)

I hear ya. They just never stuck for me. Altough, my cousin had a nice 928 with a 6box that I thought was nice.
The STi is defineatly over the top imo. I hate with a passion that wing. Functional or not, I don't like driving around with a huge rectangle on the back of my car.
You guys over in the UK have such an advantage with these types of cars. I can't even hold a descent conversation with any dealer about specs, new models, euro models, etc. Pisses me off to no end

What i cant stand with the newer Impreza's is what theyve done to the front end, paticularly the headlights and the whole 'rounded' look to it, the rears still very nice, but from the front it looks like your average saloon car (er, but with an airhood). Thats not to say the WRX isnt nice, but it looks a little to run of the mill now (at least from the front) to me, i much preffer the models from 1999 backover, but of course thats just a personal taste
