Ok, I need some major help here... Iv Had 2 hard drives in my computer for a while now, a wd120(2m) and a Special edition 80(8mg), my 120 is the primary, which i am running off of right now. So i wanted to run off the 80, and i delete partitions, and format, non quick, and as soon as it installs and boots up, i get this a message that my computer is shutting down, and it has a timer, and after like 30-40 seconds, it shuts down.. now the error says "This shutdown was iniatiated by the NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM"

and

"windows must restart now because the Remote Procedure Call(rpc) serivice terminated unexpectingly.

Now i dont have any updated virus scanning software, but you think a format would get rid of any problems. Unless its on the low level of the disk.. but i have no clue about low level formats.. anyone have any clue whats going on here?
Also.. another computer on the network is also doing it now.. Augh! Help!!!

What i forgot to mention.. is my primary seems to be uneffected, it still runs great, i dont know why.. or how the secondary that wasnt being used got affected..

I don't think it is a virus. The virus's I have seen do nothing near that and you wouldn't have noticed just now, they would have got you the second it was on your computer.

Maybe a hd failure or something went wrong in the removal of the partition.

Not an expert on HD's so I'm sorry. Might want to turn it off for 30 minutes or something and then try later. I have also heard something above freezing them in the past to get the data off of them before they really go down the crapper.

Some one here probably knows the exact problem and it will most likely be fixed soon because they are smart ;)

Depending on the OS your using should find something relevant here, but its not a virus

Did you use disk management or a 98 bootdisk?

Boy this is running rampant. It's all over my wife's company which is linked nationally and very dependent on the net.
Somebody got one over on those who don't update in a different way this time.
Bet it's on the news in the morning.

well, if you DONT have anything of value in your current state, id recommend a WIPE.
like IBM wipe. rewrites your hds in 0 and 1s
load in floppy and just zoom zoom!

then load that OS back in.

My firewalled machines do not seem to have problems. My friends have caleld a lot in the last few days about this. I have 2 employees that have called twice about this.

I have sent them all the information to the patch, I have yet to hear if it addressed their issues or not. I sen tthe info on Saturday 8/9/03.

Seriously - this one is a real bear. I have a co-worker who let the "cable guy" upgrade her ME to XP corp. He didn't bother sticking around to see if the AV software was working after the upgrade. It wasn't - McAfee was broken in the process. She also has cable with no firewall. I just advised her to use her HP restore disks because the PC wouldn't even stay up 30 seconds in Safe Mode. :( I suggested that she buy a legit version of Home and upgrade later - with my guidance.

I couldn't fix it over the phone and I'm not willing to go out of my way to fix a pirated version of XP. If I had upgraded it, she wouldn't be in this mess.

Yep, it is that last time that I will questions wether the 80 dollars that I spent on the Linksys was worth it. It makes things so easy and it is very effective.:D
