In steals & deals, I just posted some killer pricing on some 128 sticks of Kingston, like $19.30 each.

Question, one of them shows to be "single sided"

I sorta remember some discussion about single sided memory a while back, what was the deal ?

"KINGSTON TECHNOLOGY
128MB SINGLE SIDED PC133-DIMM CL3
Part# KVR133X64C3SS/128 "

Thanks

DrVette

Thanx Cheryl, I do it by searching EVERY day for several hours.

Part of my job is procurement, so I keep up with current pricing of almost all pertinant items to our business.

Anyone ?

I need to know which one is superior/works best with modern mobo's prior to next order.

thanks

Isn't something to do with density and certain chipsets? The BX chipset I was told won't recognize over a certain size of module, 32x64. Do a search for a reply from Peter Missel, he explained it once before when I was looking at a 256mb stick.
Found it. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum5/HTML/006082.html

Yes, it pertains to desity of the chips. Single sided is the high density stuff. It deosn't really matter except for 256MB sticks and higher. Those will not run on several mobos. As for speed or stability, I have not noticed a difference in 128MB sticks, but am not a super hard-corp overclocker like others with water blocks and peltier devices...

Courtesy of Buji;

"256MB PC100/133 DIMMs
for Intel chipsets, you need "registered" SDRAM"

"For 256MB
PC100/133 DIMMs for VIA chipsets, you need "unregistered" SDRAMs"

"On Intel chipsets, you canNOT mix "unregistered" and "registered"
DIMMs, so most 256MB modules must be by themselves"

"VIA chipsets,
no the other hand, can mix and match any PC133 size upto and
including 256MB DIMMs."

So to be safe,, I assume double sided sticks for "stock" ?

Single single sided or single density SDRAM modules have memory chips only on one side of the circuit card. SDRAM modules that have memory chips on both sides of the circuit card aare termed dual density or double sided. Most, but not all modern motherboards will work with either type although not generally in a mixed configuration. The bit density is different between the two. If I recall Crucial's web site, www.crucial.com (http://www.crucial.com) has some fairly good explanations on the different types of RAM modules. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Motherboards with Intel 815 and 815e chipsets will only accept a maximum of 4 'sides' of memory running at 133 MHz FSB.
Any more than 4 'sides' cause the RAM to run at 100 MHz in those motherboards by Intel design.
The single-sided DIMMs are required if you want to run RAM at 133 MHz and use all three RAM slots (maximum 512 MB) on a motherboard which uses an Intel 815 or 815e chipset.

Yeah, that was it, the Intel mobo defaulted to 100mhz FSB when you used more than 2 sticks of regular ol, regular ol memory..

Thanks for the brain boost there,

No Single Sided sticks for my inventory, when I find that a potential customer has a Intel unit, I PASS. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif J/K fur sure
