sigh, ok, here we go.

Totally new to ADSL, but I thought I had read up enough.
All my other hardware was fine, except one, I think. I ordered one of these (http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=7914) . Ignore the picture, it's irrelevant, but it appears to be an adsl modem AND router.....

However, it came in a box marked "ADSL router" and it says "ADSL router" on the front of it... There is NO mention of modem anywhere.

Anyway, I had my RJ11 running from the splitter in the phone jack, to the port on the back of the router.
I had an RJ45 coming from the first of the 4 ports into my ethernet port on my PC.

First time I started up, I went to the defailt ADSL setup page, ie, 192.168.8.1
It loaded fine, and I started to set some things up, and then it went odd and closed. Now, whenever I try to go back to the page to setup, I get a page not found error.

I've tried reconnecting everything, resetting the "router" and stuff like that.

Silly quaestion here but, could it be that they just sent me a router, not a modem/router? Or does it all sound ok...

Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, the "user manual" spent most of it's time talking about using a serial cable to set COM ports and loads of weird stuff I was told I wouldn't have to do.

In network connections, all I see other than my 56k, is Local Area Network, which is why I reckon it's not a modem...

ideas please? :s

if it doesn't say it's an adsl modem, then it's not one.

serial cable and com ports are usually to telnet into the router.

Ah, it is, just badly labelled.
I did some research, it's here (http://www.hofmann-computershop.de/online-shop/files/mentor__adsl_modem.htm)

Hmm, ok, I've made progress. When disconnected from my 56k, I can access the modem config page at http://192.168.8.1. However, when I click to go to step 2, it tries to make me connect to the net.... so I connected with my 56k, clicked step 2, and it became a 500 error.

So, I uninstalled my LAN aonncection, and my dialup, and tried again. Clicked step 2, and sure enough, it popped up with a window containing "Work offline" and "try again".

Neither work, anyone have any suggestions please? I erally need to set this sodding thing up.

First read the manual, since it seems that you are not familiar with this stuff.

Second: Leave the 56K modem alone it will not help you in the process.

You should assign a Manual IP to your computer, use 192.168.8.2 when you get it under control you can switch to DHCP.

I am not familiar with UK ISPs. In the US you need to start with PPPOE software in order to obtain ID and password. These PW and ID have to be inserted into the Router.

In the US most of the time the process should be like this:

On PPPOE:

PPPOE software is a "Dial in Type"; it initiates and keeps the connection alive while you are surfing.

The implementation of the PPOOE software used by most ISPs is unfortunately quirky.

Unfortunately most DSL ISPs do not give you an ID and password over the phone; they want you to get it online.

In such a case use single computer connected to the DSL Modem. Install their PPPOE software and establish an account. In the process you will be given ID and Password (write them down)

Once you have an account connect your Cable/DSL Router to the DSL Modem, and plug your computers to the Router.

Log onto the Router's configuration Menus. In the PPPOE menu type Username and Password, make sure that the PPPOE option is checked. Set the Router to obtain IP automatically.

As long as you don't switch off the DSL Modem, and the Router you are connected "forever" (the computer can be switched off). If you switch the Modem, and the Router off, when you switch them on again, it will take about 30-50 seconds to the Modem to obtain connection, and the Router will automatically connect to the DSL ISP.

You can uninstall WINPOET, and or whatever software they dished you.
Or if you want you can leave them installed; (The software PPPOE appears as another Dialup connection, in the Browser). Just make sure that the Internet Browser is set to use LAN, otherwise it will keep using the PPPOE.

The Router's PPPOE capacity is independent from the Computer, and it keeps the connection alive.

In case of PPPOE DSL Working through the Router should yield faster (5%-10%), and smoother Internet connection.

yeah but, I already have all of the info I need to configure moy modem, I just can't do anything on the page. As for assigning that IP to my computer, I assume you mean on the Local Area Connection in network settings?

If not, where? :s

I'm just annoyed because every time I load the configuration page, and click "step 2" it keeps trying to make me connect, saying on the top left "PPPoE + NAT disconnected" and I'm just at a dead end....

the only software the router came with was a manual on disk, that spends most of it's time talking about telnettting...

I really don't know what to do mate :(
