I downloaded the bootable version of the utility and put it on a floppy. Restarting the problematic computer with the floppy in the drive A gave this message: CMOS checksum error - Defaults loaded _ (the underscore above represents the flashing cursor on the screen.) I suspect this is NOT good news...it means? NDD 07-05-2001, 03:07 AM Try latest SiSoft Sandra (2001te), can be found on every soft-download sites (ZDNet) Best Regards ... muno 07-05-2001, 03:35 AM CMOS checksum error means your cmos battery has failed, has it been long there? If the battery has died (it is a battery, not a recharching battery as one of my late bosses (worked in it) said). You might need to replace the battery, it can boot though, you just need to enter the correct values in bios for hd's and time to get it boot up. -M daveleau 07-05-2001, 07:58 AM The S code on the processor will let you know what the speed is. Scode charts are here: PIII http://support.intel.com/support/processors/sspec/p3p.htm PII http://support.intel.com/support/processors/sspec/p2p.htm Celeron http://support.intel.com/support/processors/sspec/icp.htm Good luck Dave crazyray 07-05-2001, 10:25 AM Thanks to everyone. Muno, the case is brand new, but I'm going to pick up a battery anyway. Dave, in the interest of looking even more stupid, WHERE on the chip itself would I look for the S-numbers? Please understand that the chip is a used SECC with heatsink and fan. You know, before I started messin' with computers, they used to just call me "Ray"; the "crazy" came later. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif Fingers 07-05-2001, 10:52 AM The numbers are right on the top of the processor, they should be the first thing you see when you look at an installed Slot 1 cartridge. 600EB/256/133/165/S1 = 600 MHz 256 cache 133 fsb 1.65 volts S1 stepping -anything over 550MHz and/or 256 cache is a P3 Coppermine, anything with 512 cache or 2.0 volts IS NOT. crazyray 07-05-2001, 11:11 AM DOH! Thanks, Fingers. Apparently, I'm not only stupid, I'm blind... All you folks have done your part to make the planet a nicer place. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif SysOpt.com
