Can anyone tell me which OS is better: Win98SE or WinME? I dont know which is better gaming and office apps. From what ive heard and read, ME wasnt very compatible w/ some earlier software. Is that the case w/ hardware too?
thnx, slacker
Well, it seems that most people have their own opinions regarding Win98SE Vs. ME. People who have ME installed and running smoothly seem to say that it's as good as Win98 or better. And some people say to stay away from ME. My experience using it wasn't good. Not only was it less stable than Win98SE (Win98SE is also an unstable OS in my opinion, just not as bas as ME), it was also more memory hungry than ME. It probably has a lot to do with that fancy GUI. However, the best thing to do would be to try both OS's and see what works best for you... For me, it's Win2k or NT4 all the way! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
Do a search in "Apps & Operating Systems" and you'll be able to find tons of opnions on WinME Vs. Win98SE...

Win 98 SE is the most stable OS based of win95's kernel. ME is probably one of the worst. Some people have gotten it running smoothly, but it's usually more luck then anything. I'd go with SE.
SE is also allot less expensive! I got a legal copy here at Sysopt for $25!

Yes, shiny stuff is always fun, but i'd go with Win98 SE, it seems a lot more reliable.

ME is rock solid stable only if you use 100% compatible everything. I do and have zero problems, restarting only to update Anti-virus and then only about once a week.
The same with SE except there is a whole lot more software and hardware (drivers included)that is compatible.

SE hands down. I have both. ME is just eye candy. SE runs way smoother and faster. I don't even like the way ME looks that much either.

Then it looks like I'll be staying w/ the SE. Had that kind of doubtful feeling about ME for a long time. Wanted to see if ME was worth it before screwing w/ updating the comp to ME. And the comp isnt even mine! It's my parents'. Thanx for all the advice. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif As for my own comp, I wouldnt even bother w/ updating: 1. It's too old--a friggin Cyrix!!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif But you'd be surprised what this ol' processor can do!; 2. Windows98 is running just fine...no use in messing w/ it.

I had a little pol on OSes a month ago, you can check it here (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/013023.html) , Win98SE wins http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif bigtime over ME. Also, some thoughts of mine included ...
Best Regards ...

I never tried ME but couple of my friends did and they all switched back to SE after sometimes coz of gaming incompatibility.

I prefer SE, because I've had nothing but problems with ME (not anymore, thanks to format c:/s), but, for yours, like you said, don't mess w/ it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The only problem I had with ME was not being able to play certain games. C&C RA2 would crash after 1 min of play time (without tweaking the game), Thief2 had audio but no video, ME doesn't run older games that require DOS, like it won't run F22 Raptor.
So I went back to 98SE.
But, on the other hand, it did run stable for me. Of course, so does 98SE.
