What does the fan control do to help the power supply? I assume it changes the speeds of the fans in the unit, but is that really needed? I am going to buy the 431w unit but i don't know which model. should i go with the fan control unit or the standard unit? please help(ordering 7/3)

The fan control is not a very good idea. I read an article recently that detailed how to disable the item inside the PS. The reason it can be bad, is because the temp monitoring can often cause the system to build up heat. The PS may not be hot, but the system could be. The PS does pump a fair amount of heat out of the system. The only diff in not having it, is the PS fan will run full tilt all the time. ....nothing wrong with that!

I run a 330W version without the separate speed control - TBH, the units are so quiet, I couldn't envisage any noticeable reduction in noise if speed control was used.

I was wondering, my Inwin case has a thermistors on both the intake and exhaust fans (They are both Enermax fans). Can I snip the leads to the thermistor and jumper the two wires together and get the same result as the power supply fix? (I'm assuming that the temperature sensors are in fact thermistors??)

Both models have fan speed thermal control.

The FC model's difference is that it can completely shut off the fan if you go into sleep mode.

The only way I know to disable the fan control is to open up the PSU and snip the Thermistor in there that the fan uses.
This is highly unrecommended, will void all kinds of warrenties, and as a bonus, you might shock yourself and start smoking even if its unplugged because of retained charge in the capacitors.

I saw a link sometime about 2 weeks ago, but I dont recall where I saw it about how to do this, full with pictures and everything.

I believe it was either at the HardOCP (www.hardocp.com) or Overclockers (www.overclockers.com)
