I'm helping 2 people setup their computer on their novel network, and they both want to use outlook for their email. They have network space allocated for personal files. With win98 what would be the simplest way to go about doing this. I know the outlook.pst file is the default folder containing messages, but it does not contain the account names/passwords/servers etc.

thanks.

You could set up Outlook with 2 profiles, and then it will bring up a box asking which profile you wanted to use.

I realize you can add separate accounts in the options tab. but doesn't it still allow you to look at the other persons old messages and calendar?

The profiles options sounds more like what i'm looking for. were you talking about the windows 98 profiles or is there a specific option for just outlook?

I don't want to store the entire windows profile for each user on network space, just their email.

Its in control panel under mail setttings -> profiles tab.
Its just for email not whole user profile!!!

my only option there is simply 'mail'. If I open it, it just brings up the accounts tab.

edit: ok i switched it from "internet mail only" to "corporate or workgroup" mode and now there is an option for profiles.

How do I get it to ask which profile to use when starting up?

edit 2: Ok i figured that part out.

Things seemed so much easier when using an exchange server.

Thanks for all of your help everyone.

THe only question i might have now is there some way to password protect the profile to keep the other user from trying to open it?

The profile is linked with the users exchange domain password logon.

Do you mean hide the actual files on the pc?

there is no exchange server. there is no active directory domain. Its a win98 machine on a novel network. They are setup to use internet mail ie pop3 server and smtp server etc. Is that what you were asking?

Sorry lost track of the thread somewhat - been posting quite a lot this week.

Yep should do exactly the same for pop3 access - profile will link with tha account and password.

Are you not using groupwise?

Sounds like a pretty basic novell network (2user????) - it wouldnt happen to be bindery v3.12 (my favourite - halcyon days). Although i presume you are not using ip on the novell server and the novell network is really irrellevant to the post or are you using it as a gateway?

I take it you are mapping a drive for the users and then setting up the .pst on their network drive?

You need to also setup outlook to ask which profile to choose on start of outlook.

what version of outlook - the new officexp version is pretty much crippled suprisingly in a few ways.

Select a user profile to use when Outlook starts
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click the Mail icon .
Click Show Profiles.
Do one of the following:
To specify a profile to be used every time you start Microsoft Outlook, click Always use this profile, and then, in the list, click the profile you want.

To be prompted to select the Outlook user profile to use each time you start Outlook, click Prompt for a profile to be used.

To modify Microsoft Outlook data storage options, click Data Files.

thanks for the post, I've already done everthing that you have posted.

I was just wondering if there was a way to put a password on the profile. You see if there isn't, then one user can choose the other persons profile, and then choose the incorrect pst file when it says it can't find it. (since it wont find the one on the mapped drive of the other user). They will then be able to change the settings and basically mess up the other person's settings. Sure their mail is safe, just the personal settings.

It's ok, you don't need to reply anymore. I was just clarifying a bit.

if the pst files are on the network, then all you should need to do is set the permissions properly. If the other user can't access the pst, that user won't be able to view the other user's mail.

edit, i think i misunderstood you last post...but i read it again. if the user can not access their pst, outlook will prompt the user to create a new on or open an existing. It becomes a problem when the user create a new pst and says "where's my old mail?"

If you're network permissions are set correctly and drive mappings are correct then they should not be able to access anyone elses pst files - indeed it will recreate a new one!!!

Have you already figured this out?

I have tried with both Outlook 97 and 2K.
Win98 only supports one mail user for Outlook.

Other users could log in but there was only the one, original account.

I ended up formatting the PCs and upgrading them to 2K.
This aveliated all of my multi-user problems.
