Why mess with what works? [BR]Magikal 07-03-2001, 12:14 AM I have a microsoft intellimouse explorer (with the pretty red laser) and running win2k+sp2. recently I have beeen having some troubles with this mouse. When ever I move the mouse around a lot (ie:when playing games) the light will turn off for a few seconds and then come back on. I loose all functionality of the mouse (all buttons, wheel, cursor movement, etc.). Sometimes it will be off for so long that windows will have to reinstall it when it comes back but will only install it as an unknown usb device. I then have to uninstall it and then unplug it then plug it back in. It will also do this when I am surfing the web (I think because I move the mouse around a lot). Could this be a mouse problem or a usb problem?. I had it running off my keyboard usb ports but then moved it to my self POWERED 4 port hub to see if it was a power issue but still the problem persists. The problem is becoming increasingly more common and is very irritating because I cannot play games (I have a back up ball mouse on the p/s2 port but once you go ball less you never go back to the ball..err something like that:0) I will probably try and see if it will run on the p/s 2 port but I am seriously thining that this mouse is dead (by the way it is one of the first intellimouse explorers. I heard that they released a new one that fixed some of the issues with the laser). anyways thank you for any help. p.s. the bad speeling/typing fairies are in my head again so please excuse the spelling/typing..... Maybe that will solve your problem(worth a try) daveleau 07-03-2001, 12:47 AM What is happening is there is a power problem with the USB port. This could be a hardware problem, but is more likely related to the driver. Are you using a K6-2 processor on a VIA chipset mobo? If so, that is your problem and there is a fix for it. If not, then I would reinstall the USB drivers for your mobo. Also, are you using any other USB devices. On other devices I have noticed problems when you overrun your 12Mbps bandwith (there is a low bandwith ceiling for USB 1 which USB 2.0 relieves when it is released). I would try to unplug other usb devices and see if that alleviates the problem. If it does, then you need to get a PCI USB card. This will give you two more usb ports and a fresh 12Mbps bandwith. Good luck Dave [BR]Magikal 07-03-2001, 09:13 AM Well I switched to the p/s2 port an the darn mouse still has problems. Looks like its time to get a new mouse http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif (darn things are expensive at 40-50 dollars). The only other thing I can think of would be the power supply in my computer. I am currently using a 235 watt psu. I have a lot of things drawing power from the psu. System specs: Asus p2b-s Pentium 3 650 384mb ram 3 ibm hard drives voodoo 5 sblive platinum nic crom and cdrw drives and for cooling i have a total of 7 fans 3 120mm ,2 80mm and, 2 60mm on the processor. I know a 235 watt psu is stretching it with all of the devices and fans that I have but would it cause such a problem with this mouse on both usb and ps2? I do have a 300watt psu but i would have to put a new fan in the darn thing if I wanted to use it. Well Im sure its probably just the mouse .....**** microsoft....it hasnt even been a year and its broken already....maybe its microsofts way of making you buy a new one every year(subscription fee for a mouse). well thnx for the help everyone. nygel3 07-04-2001, 08:37 AM If you adjust your mouse for less required hand motion you will really see some problems. I have been trying to get a good ball-less mouse but have found NONE of them seem to work like a good clean ball mouse. I noticed the sticker on one recent Microsoft optical mouse that said "Improved optical technology! Now 33% faster." It could be improved another 100% the way it works and I still wouldn't buy another. Like operating systems, Microsoft needs to get it right before they release another optical mouse; This improved Microsoft wheel mouse was not worth the price of a $5 bargin mouse. Microsoft started making them, now maybe somebody else can get the design right and run with it... SysOpt.com
