Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2.2GHz
512MB PC2100 @ 147Mhz
Gigabyte GA7-DXE
GeForce FX 5200 @ 290/510

3dmark 2001SE - ~9100
3dmark 2003 - Get back to you on that one, still messin' :D

As for painting your drive covers, you're better off with plastic dyes - they don't chip/flake off.

What are these dyes ur talking about and where do i get them?! and btw how do i remove the drive covers?! and why dont u guys use PCMark2002  HEY did u overclock ur graphics card.....cause i have the FX 5200 also and i cant get passed 7500

I'll help ya out BigJakk. Semper-Fi make sure you turn off Anti-Ailaising, Anisotropic Filtering, and v-sync. that will most likely boost your scores. that's wierd that your scores are rounded. (7500 and not like 7567 or something) I do use PC mark but my scores are not good for my system at all.
XP 2500+ Barton
512 megs pc2700--only 2.2gigs of memory bandwidth:(
Gainward Geforce 4 Ti4800SE 310/650
Gigabyte Ga7vax (bad mobo, slow, cant change memory settings)
Western Digital 80 gig 7200 rpm special edition
SB Live! and modem blah blah blah

3DMark 2001-12680
3DMark 2003-1757
PC Mark CPU-5465 MEM-3678:( HDD-1065

Semper Fi how did you get such a high hard drive score in PC mark. i even got the special edition with 8 meg cache and it can't get 1600, thats really high. thaz like raid or something. Oh and that case looks familiar, hmm oh wait i got one! i like it!!!:)

I've never used the dyes, but you should be able to get them from auto shops, like this one (http://www.seriousauto.com/g2/plastic_dye/).
What make is your FX5200? They're hardly performance demons at the best of times, but some are factory underclocked because they use slower RAM - if you have one of those there's not a lot you can do. Standard timings are 250MHz core and 400MHz memory - mine's overclocked to 290MHz core and 510MHz memory. It will go higher, but it gets unstable - plus I'm still only using the stock passive cooling :x
Read Jakk's article (http://www.sysopt.com/articles/VCOGuide/index.html) on overclocking. Sorry Jakk, that's probably your line too! :p

Thanks for the tip on the dyes ill look into that......as for the graphics card....im scared to overclock it becuase it has no fan....just a heatsink....not to mention that my case doesnt have proper ventilation so yeah ;)

You can probably overclock the ram a decent way but i wouldnt touch the core without soem sort fo cooling. Ventilation will be helpful but isnt a necessity when it comes to overclocking IMO

As long as you take it slow, overclocking the core will be fine. I spent hours slowly bumping it up gradually and testing for stability. The RAM'll go up to around 520MHz up from the standard 400  but after 510 or so it doesn't seem to impact the benchmarking results much - the card's very much core limited methinks. Once I get some decent cooling (my case ventilation sucks too... actually I don't have any fans at all) I'll try for 300MHz. The funny thing is I hardly play games anymore, it's become a bit of an obsession.

hmmmmmmmm i see thank you.......but hey how come when i look at my computer properties it says my p4 is at 2.41 ghz....and my directx version is 9 or better, but when i look at my properties on PCMark2002 it says my p4 is at 2.37ghz and my directx version is 8.1..... wtf is that? OH and btw ...why arnt the signatures working in this forum?

...why arnt the signatures working in this forum?

Theyre disabled.

As for the CPU variation, thats typical of programs they wont always report the exact CPU value, the CPU speed varies slightly anyhows

haha aite jakk but uhh.......that face u have on under your name is ther scariest mother ******* thing ive ever seen!!! haha and hmm one more question.....whats the best brand of colored case fans.....cuase i wanted to get 3 more colored fans to have good ventilation in my case and i was just wondering if u knew like whats the best brand out there that i could find at FRYS or something

You should see the old avatar :p...

As for case fans im not into the coloured stuff myself butthis link:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Fans_47.html

might give yu soem ideas, i personally go for biggest CFM shifter because i like stuff cool, but you'll prolly want a combo of the best colour, cfm and noise levels

haha aite thanks....and that messed up baby looking thing on ur attachment is EVER WORSE  haha and one more off the subject question.........i use ethernet......wich is better to use with it my onboard or my network card?! it seems to me that when i use onboard that it lags my computer a little

http://www.angelfire.com/mech/smpr_fi :p

Bigjakkstaffa
08-05-2003, 04:49 PM
In terms of internet/network connection speed the two should be equal, however the onboard will probably rely on the CPU somewhat, though it shouldnt be enough to make a noticable difference to performance. Thus if you got the spare NIC, go with that, if not then i would just use the onboard and be done

aite so your saying use the network card.....ok ill do that....cause i bought it after i got my comp....not realizing that i had onboard ethernet port......oh well i only wasted 15 $.....if it was any more money I would cry :)

Bigjakkstaffa
08-05-2003, 04:56 PM
Theyre always useful to have spare anyhows, i used to have one in this box however ive thrown it in a third 'work in progress' machine and am just using the onboard for now fine and dandy :)

Got my specs and scores, pretty good considering my major bottleneck (vid card)
Mips 8861
3dMark2001 5573
2500+ @3300+ or 3400+ dont know but the clock is at 2.315Ghz :D Which i am happy at what i got it to.

I have four of the coloured Coolermaster fans in my machine.....from all the ones I looked at these are the quietest and also have a very good air flow...make sure and check the specs on fans before you buy...airflow and noise..! I know a few pretty ones that push ...like ZERO air...and create a hell of a noise....you dont want 3 or four bad ones in ur case!

thats not really true anymore as most MB have there own processer that looks after usb+ethernet+sound like the nforce + nforce 2 MCP. so most of the time you will get better results and less cpu usage using the on board nic.

Bigjakkstaffa
08-07-2003, 09:19 AM
Even with the Nforce 2 there are optimisation settings for the onboard NIC in the registry, at default its set to conserve CPU cycles rather than for network performance... a number of users have omplained of slow performance in relation to their internet connection speed and it has been due to the onboard NIC being optimised for lower CPU usage rather than network throughput. Quick tweak to the registry though and all is up to speed.

So, although integrated LAN is becoming easier on the CPU (as a re USB devices) as CPU's get faster, to say its not drawing from it at all would be an over statment

i've always had better perfrmance with onboard nic's. if your buying a £5- £20 card your buying a card that isn't offloading checksum calculations from the cpu. so a $15 card wil not improve on an onboard nic if anything it will be worse

just done a test on my comapq evo with onboard and pci nic. the onboard just uses less cpu than an smc pci nic. have a jpeg of this but no idea how to upload it.

What kind of hardware do you have in your system?
I had a FX 5200 card, did'nt perform any better than my TI 4200 and cost three times the price at Fry's when I bought it.

AMD 3200XP
1 gig Corsair 3200C2PT
ATI 9800 pro 128 gig
rest of the stuff

Jar-head (said with respect!)
You should be getting at least double those scores with that set up. What is your fsb and multiplier set at in your bios? What model mob do you have?
