I'm looking for an os that is stable and still lets me play most of the popular games on the market like counter strike. I want to go with linux, but I'm not sure if those windows emulators can run those intensive games. If not linux, should I go with win2k? Also, if there are emulators that can handle those games, what are they called?

I'd have to agree. (although win2k I have been able to install every game I've got, one gave me trouble. Vampire the masquerade. Had to use a different setup.inf file. and it seems to close the program if I try to start my own mulitplayer game.) I'm going to be dualing win2k and win98 on my next setup for this reason.

My machine is mainly for games. I'm running Win98SE and it's been perfectly stable for me.

I'd have thought those emulators / virtual machines are not up to running games at all.

I run virtual windoze 98 in win2K using http://www.vmware.com (so I can run an old FORTRAN compiler). It's acceptable performance (i.e. useable). The virtual machine 'feels' about like a P75 or thereabouts, which is fine for a FORTRAN compiler and Sigma Plot / Excel, but would be totally useless for a decent modern game.
