I'm helping a friend with a Gateway lapotp. We had some very bad storms with lightening 2 nights ago and since that time, he has not been able to obtain a dialtone.

He's running XP Home Edition. The first thing I noticed is that Windows had automatically "disabled" the modem. So, I enabled it and the diagnostics (query modem) look fine. But, when using HyperTerminal or MSN .... there is no dialtone.

I removed the Modem from the Control Panel and rebooted -- WinXP auto installed the modem's driver. However, I still do not get a dialtone. I did doublecheck the jack/line with a phone and there is a dialtone.

Any suggestions? The lightening was so close ... that the large tree in their front yard was split down the middle - literally. Could the modem show as fine when querying ... but still be fried?

Thanks.

It's toast. :( I guess it will need a PCMCIA modem. Consider a NIC combo card.

Since the modem is either part of the mainboard or proprietary, it's cheaper to add one.

one thing to check is in the country properties...make sure its not set to call forwarding or pulse dialing...unless your in the states then you may need to select pulse dialing.
