Are there any drawbacks to getting say a 4x4x24 read/write CDROM vs a regular 40x CDROM. Aside from pure speed, is the difference that they read going to be noticable when playing a game that accesses the CD? Is 24x going to be plenty fast for some time to come? Thanks.

I've got both a 40x (Kenwood 40 TrueX), and a 4x4x24 CDRW (HP 8100). They both have their uses, for instance, if I'm ripping a song of a CD to make an MP3, the 40x will blaze through it in about 30 seconds. But if I want to read a CDR (or make one for that matter), the CDRW does a much better and faster job because of it's high quality laser. As for games, you won't notice any difference between the two. They're both more than fast enough for any game you could play on them. But if you have the money, get both, they'll complement each other nicely.

I have a 32X CD-Rom and a 2-2-6 speed CD/RW. I would recomend you get the two drives for a couple of reasons. You can copy a CD from your CD-Rom to your CD-RW easily, you can use you cd/rw for audio cds, and it just looks better!!!
