Post what you think is the best video/computer game of ALL TIME!

I think Final Fantasy 7 is the best game ever made.

However the shortlist is

1)Frogger

3)Deus Ex
4)Pong
5)It came from the desert

4.) Elite (PC)

I dunno about the best, it all depends on mood, etc.

But as far as making off with huge chunks of my life:

1. Doom2
2. Unreal Tournament
3. C&C Red Alert
4. Starcraft
5. Gran Turismo ( 1 & 2 )
6. RTCW
7. MOH
8. Quake 1, 2, and 3
9. Warcraft 1, 2 and 3
10. Max Payne
11. Age of Empires

The new Half Life looks like it's gonna be pretty good. Just thought I'd state the obvious there.:D

And staying with the obvious motif, I sure am hanging out for DoomIII...

Rise of Nations looks pretty good to.

Syberia! I just beat the game. It is beautiful!

That piqued my interest, as I have never heard of that game. I went to a review of it on "The Adrenaline Vault", this is what the first line in the review says:
"Every once in a while a computer game comes along that knocks the socks off even the most seasoned reviewer"

The rest is equally complimentary. I think I'll have to check this game out, it sounds awesome.

Shenmue (both 1 and 2)
Killer Instinct
Counter Strike
GTA 3
The Ninja Turtles games on the NES
NHL 98 (Even though I'm not a Hockey fan, this was my favorite game when it came out)

The original Might and Magic game on the Apple IIe back in, erm, 1987 I think. 1st game I ever played, and I was hunting about seeing when it was released, and found a walkthrough - I played this game for about 2 years, and never finished it coz I got stuck - turns out, I was quite litereally 4 moves from finishing the game. How bloody annoying is that!

Oh, and Chuckie Egg on the Dragon32, Xenon2 on the Amiga, and the original R-Type on any platform (Spectrum, Amiga and arcade my personal faves). And the Sentinel on the Speccy - a thinking mans game.

And the sit down Star Wars Arcade game (with vector graphics) - and the very nice Amiga conversion.

Nearly forgot Carrier Command on the Speccy/Amiga!

On the PC, erm, Jetfighter 2 was a classic in it's day, and the original Civilization saw me though College, and made my pal who went on to be my best man buy his 1st PC just to play Civ! Also helped him some 10-15 years later to get his rather fine job of Network Consultant - all coz of Civ! Let's see how many of todays games can claim to have effected someone's life in such a way in a few years time :)

best games.... well some of the best games came out around the snes days. first and foremost you gotta include chrono trigger THE BEST game EVER. also the secret of mana series was good. as was the little known illusion of gaia. (for all you romers out there, get seiken densetsu 3 (secret of mana 2) and terranigma) then we must not forget space invaders, pong, and the all important: tetris. these three are the kinda games that revolutionized the industry and paved the way for your sof's and medal of honors and what not. half life must be given recognition. i feel like im forgetting something.... OH YES: the very much under-rated phantasy star series for the sega master system and genisis (phantasy star online while addicting, really wasnt that amazing). sometimes i feel that im the only one who took the time to stop and enjoy those little gems, and any classic gamers should definately check em out.

And an honourable mention for Splinter Cell.

Street Fighter 2
Half Life
Deus Ex
Halo
Final Fantasy 3/6 (US/JPN)
Command and Conquer series
Warcraft series
Starcraft
Super Mario Kart
Legend of Zelda series
Metroid series
Resident evil series
Panzer Dragoon Saga

junancy obviously knows video games as final fantasy 6 was definately the best ff game. what id like to see is a remake of some of the older final fantasy's with new 3d graphics a la ff10. if they remade 6 and 1, and then made a sequel to 7, that would be really cool.

I'd love to see that happen. I remember reading somewhere recently that there was talk of making a sequel to FF7. It was asked of Square-Enix if they would consider doing a sequel to FF7 since they did a sequel to FFX, and their reply was that they would love to see it happen and that they would consider doing it if the demand was great enough. Then they go on to state that it would probably never happen anyway due to their many oncoming projects. That would be pretty cool though...

Games I like a lot:

Neverwinter Nights
Freedom Force
Baldur's Gate

A few others too, like Fallouts, Planescape Torment, etc.

I don't like games that are too "twitchy," which lets out most FPS games. Besides they induce nausuea, so they're not high on my list. I like a game with a pause, and the ability to save anywhere. We have six kids here right now, and sometimes you have to get up then and there,

Another big thing for me is expandability. NWN has 2500+ additional modules available on line, as well as all the servers. Freedom Force has hundreds of heroes, and a good dozen addtional campaigns.

You can't get that on a console.

Either I'm getting to good at the first person shooter game genre or they are getting far to predictable in their game play.
I keep finishing them to quickly and effortlessly.
There seems to be few real surprises. The plot often unfolds in a very predictable manner and ambushes are expected long before they happen.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel the same.

Examples
Unreal 2 & Unreal Tournament 2003 - purchased both and finished both in the same week.
Star Trek Elite Force - finished it and did it again on a higher dificulty level in the same week
Alien Vs Predator 2 - Great fun but finished it easily. Marine being the most challenging

I hope Half life 2 and Doom 3 have a little more substance

don't forget deus ex 2 and max payne 2. If all of the above don't have substance, I'm going to be extremely angry. Mostly because I need a new graphics card before I can play these things above 640x480.

I'm gonna wait for about 3 months after each game(except half-life 2, it looks like the best of the bunch) is released, cause I'm not gonna pay for any **** games.

No way the best from every aspect - programming , 3d design/fp maths , layout , playability , sound , etc has to be ELITE on the BBC micro then PC.
No other game has come close to having it all...

Beachhead , Xenon2 , Arcadians , Pacman , Frogger , Missile Command , Xevious , Nervyron , Space Invaders ,
They dont make games with such simple yet original concepts anymore its all down to how many colours , sounds , polygons....
How sad
:(

Prince of Persia was another groundbreaker top contender...

Hmmm Yar was rather good and hunt the wumpus on the apple ii and scott text adventure series - simple concept works the best made you use your imagination rather than fancy gfx although sound would have been a winner.

Flashback on of the few games I completed - classic!!!

Yeah it was a copy of Prince's groundbreaking sprite routines but it was a classic on its own too for it!!!

Never been much for video arcades and I don't play FPS games - was always a pinball player, a wargamer or card player

These games I remember fondly and would still play them if I had those computers.

Taipan (TRS-80)

EA's first game M.U.L.E. (Atari 400/800)

Beachhead (C-64)

Tristan Pinball (PC DOS)
Scorched Earth (PC DOS)

The first 25 minutes or so of HL is all about creating an atmosphere of comfort and every day routine...and then throwing it into mayhem and building a real sense of confusion. If you dont mind bearing with this unti you reach The Office complex (which is fairly quickly), then you are in for one hell of a ride that will take you an age to get through. I urge anyone who was turned off by the beggiing of HL to stick with it at least until theyve gotten out of 'The Office Complex' or 'We've Got Hostiles', and im pretty sure they'll thank themselves for it

Quake three is still the top MP FPS IMO, UT's not bad but Q3a thrashes it sensless and UT2k3 is basically Quake 3 with new graphics.

As for HL, you HAVE to try and stick with it, it is slow at first, the first tiem i played it i got bored with it before even getting into the test chamber, then a coupel of days later me dad started going on about this great game i'd installed on the computer that he's been playing all day... the rest as they say is history.

Plus, unlike most other FPS, it doesnt treat the gamer with kid gloves, it actually gives em challenging situations and enemies to play through rather than a boring game without challenge that can be polished off in 6 hours, liek most recent FPS' are

Ok ok
Ive downloaded it - will give you a proper review.
I just love vertical scrollers - used to write em for US Gold , Acornsoft way back in the days of the 6502 when machine code was the real mans programm9ing language - now we have all these inefficient programmers using c++ etc

Have ot agree halflife was big girls pants - now URT2003 thats a dogsb of a game.

Days of yore
sigh.......
