i have a wired network in my home
Does this mean you already have a router?

my roommate refuse to use wireless because its expensive so i give up and i till buy everything for the network
You can still have your roommate on the wired network. You can just add an access point for you.

the powerbook comes with wireless extreme card built in its 802.11g i think , so i only need a pci card or a usb acess point for my roommate destop and the router
Wireless extreme=802.11g
Again, you don't have to change anything about your roommate's computer if you already have a wired network assuming you have a router already.

if you plan on using wireless PCs and Macs, I would recommend getting a Linksys 802.11g WAP.

That card would work just fine. Make sure that the back of his computer is not in a corner or something. It might have problems connecting to the router. You need to assess the location. You might want to get a wireless bridge instead.

The bridge would give you more flexibility as far as antenna placement. It would also be an easier installation, since you don't even have to open your roommate's computer. He could use the same network card and everything.

Well, if you're still searching, I'm pretty sure Apple's own Airport Extreme will work with PCs too. But I think anything that supports 802.11g will work with any other 802.11g device.

BTW, Linksys does not officially support Mac (e.g. you will see nothing regarding Macs in the system requirements of their products), although most of their products work without a hitch. Sort of dumb in my opinion, but just to let ya know.

Eeek! PowerBook...Apple...light headed...

LinkSys. I just bought this - Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Access Point + Cable/DSL Router (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00007KDVI/002-0099744-3636876)

I also have the Wireless-B and two LinkSys wireless cards, one PCI and one USB...they work awesome!

D-Link products are good too.

Would love to go wireless but after recent reports about brain damage caused by close proximity to 5ghz wireless I think Ill hold off!!!

First it was mobile phones now its pc's.
Duh!!!

Linksys seems the best bang for the buck though!!!

I do like D-link products - always have - surprisingly cheap too!!!

Link(s)?

It would take VERY VERY close proximity (like wearing AP's as earmuffs) for months if not years for radiation at this power output to do any damage. That said, I'd like to read any legitimate articles you've come across that speculate otherwise.

Yeah I used to think that about mobile phones too.
I guess its all much of a lottery but then again I did get headaches from using a mobile and they stopped when I stopped using them.

The article was in wireless news , its a uk mag - study was done in switzerland , will try and dig out a url if they have a website.

the mac aint gonna care to what it connects too, since the WAP will be connected to something else and u could connect it to whatever comp as u use an internet screen to set it up

and inregards to the 5ghz killing me brain, thats why i smoke and drink, so i dont havta worry bout that ****

Cell radiation is placed directly next to the ear/head. Different story. I've been designing, engineering, installing, and supporting WLAN's (900 Mhz, 2.4 Ghz, and 5 Ghz radios) since 97. I don't know anyone who has been exposed to more low power microwave radiation than me. I don't mention that because it proves there is no danger at all. In all my years at this I have never seen one article, white paper, whatever, that has convinced me there is any danger. Very low power radios and as long as you keep 12 inches away from the radio, or don't use it, say in a laptop, 6 or 7 hours a days, there's no problem. I have been exposed to it 8 hours a day, 200 days a year for over 6 years. I wouldn't suggest you change your mind. To each his own, but there is no problem with radio LAN's or WAN's.
