Hello friends,

I have got an issue with my laptop where the windows2000 can not boot properly... give NTOSKRNL.exe ERROR.

Chkdsk doesn’t work well as it stops and gives error message "can not complete due to ...."

Windows Console gives me access, and I like to reinstall windows2000 or XP. But first I need to save my files as They are somewhere on my desktop..

As I am short on space, I need to delete major directories. “delete” or rd doesn’t work as the directory isn't empty. I would need help to by pass that...

Also rename doesn’t allow full directories to be renamed. Any bypass?

if non of the above can help, how would I be able to run other programs like norton commander or something similar from console to quickly delete unnecessary data and make room for new re-install?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

no need to screw around with all the stuff.

just remove the hdd, connect a laptop to IDE adapter and plug the drive into a desktop system. At last check they were $7 at compusa.

When you reinstall Windows NT, 2000 and XP, only the operating system is removed and replaced. Files created and 3rd-party applications and files are left behind for salvage.

Just reinstall and reclaim your files.

True, But Windows 2000 Setup warns your that all other related files will be over writen. even my documents and desktop files etc... Not sure if it is true or not..

I've never lost anything.

Have you tried a repair?

Using the SET Command, You can bypass the *" restriction.
I first used

set AllowWildCards = TRUE

then I was able to delete some directories with files inside them and rename my related profile from c:\Documents and Settings\...
incase it would been over written.

now I have all my files and more room to reinstall windows2000 and XP.....

Thank you all guys.

------------------------------------

set
Displays and sets Recovery Console environment variables.

set variable = parameter

set AllowWildCards = TRUE

The following environment variables are supported:

AllowWildCards Enable wildcard support for some

commands, such as DEL, that do not

otherwise support them.

AllowAllPaths Allow access to all files and folders

on the computer.

AllowRemovableMedia Allow files to be copied to removable

media, such as floppy disks.

NoCopyPrompt Do not prompt when overwriting file.

To display the list of current environment variable settings, type set without parameters.

The set command is an optional Recovery Console command that can be enabled by using either the Group Policy snap-in or the Security Configuration and Analysis snap-in.

Repair didn't work in my case... it did stop after 27% as there where some non-repairable errors. :(
