does Overclocking where away the CPU, and how fast can I get a 2.4GhzC Inel with a water cooled case (koolance 601) and an Antec 480w power supply

I am not the authority in overclocking, but if done improperly it can signicantly shorten the life of the processor. As far as the second part of your questions, how far you can push the processors varies from each CPU, but i've read people have been able to take that processor 3.0Ghz+

I think u can get 3.5Ghz, 1200FBS with 1.575 voltage

how do you properly overclock then?

General rule I have for clocking is push it to see how far it will go stable and then back off by about 10% of the total speed. Also keep the temps below 50C.
As for lifetime of CPU then depends on how often you intend keeping the CPU. 2 years maximum is about all I intend keeping mine. Longest clocked CPU I have an Intel P2 300 @450MHz and has now been running without a hitch for over 3 years and is heavily used.
In 2 years time the CPU you have today is going to be worth very little in comparison to CPU's we will have then.
I feel nowadays the speed of the processors are rapidly approaching speeds where very few of the 'general' users are pushing the chips anywhere near their full potential with the exception of gaming.
I don't know what the 'average' users specs are but I suspect it's over 1 gig.
By average user I mean someone running office, etc. I open up Excel,Word,Access, etc then you barely get the click over with to open it and it's up and running.
My brother is director of the computing section of GlaxoSmithKline and when an upgrade takes place you are talking around 25000 (that's not a typo) systems at a go and this happens on average every 2 - 3 years. That's about 25 million dollars worth!! Remember though that the depreciation of computers is HUGE, after 2 years they have depreciated to about nothing but its tax deductable.
