Here's the scoop. I have an athlon xp 1500 on a msi k7t turbo 2 which is kt133a at 266 fsb. I need a bump in performance now without spending much since my next major upgrade is Athlon 64 when they sort out the sockets and is running at least 2.4 GHz.
My mobo can support up to xp 2600+ which I can get for around $100. How much improvement will I get with this upgrade, given the bandwidth limitations with pc 133? I need this for video capture and mpeg editing mainly.
Thanks for any input.

I would have thought from such an upgrade you will get a considerable kick, however you wont get anyhwere near the full potential due to the limitations of PC133 as you state, ideally any CPU over 1.5ghz should be coupled up with DDR RAM, however if your mobo supports it and you got nothin else to do with the money i would pop it in, of course if your gonna be changing the whole system for 64bit's within the year though i would probably just use the money elswhere and hang fire until you can do the full upgrade

Well I was surprised to find that your mobo will run a Tbred. Most KT133's won't, without a mod, if at all.
I'd go for a 1700+ JIUHB DLT3C. It's the best overclocker around.
Here's some linkage on your board:

My 2nd comp has a XP1800 Tbred A running on a kt133. Kinda sucks cause it can't do 133 fsb (not a kt133A), so it's declocked.

Sounds like a good idea my mobo officially supports tbreds. How do I unlock the multiplier on tbreds?
Tbreds are alread unlocked. It just depends on your mobo.

Any online stores that definitely stock the 1700+ JIUHB DLT3C?
Tbreds are already unlocked.
Is that 100% true? I don't want to shell out for the cpu then find I have to pay for some unlocking kit.
They are unlocked.
excaliberpc.com has the JIUHB DLT3C in oem and retail.
I hope you read that thread I supplied above.

If you want multipliers above 12.5 you'll need to do a chip mod.
You may just be better off overclocking what you've got or going for a cheaper 1700+ for $45 from newegg.
That's what I'd do.

If you want multipliers above 12.5 you'll need to do a chip mod.
So that will give me around 1.6 Ghz. My motherboard multiplier goes up to 16x. Are you saying to get say 2Ghz I have to modify the chip, or will the tbred run at whatever multiplier I select? I haven't oc'd since the easy days of the pencil trick with tbirds.

No tbred is unlocked. No XP is unlocked. BUT the Nforce2 CAN Unlock them. It can not unlock palo's or tbirds though. As you can see unless you have the magical combo of Nf2 and Barton or tbred your shet outta luck with the auto unlock feature.

You "Would" (if NF2) be able to select from anything UP to 12.5x. No 13x-16x will not work. Some say 15x went for them though on reviews I read BUT Im sure they used the wire mod to get it.:t
The L1's are all closed on Tbreds. Therefore they ARE unlocked.
Read the thread from amdmb. They had 12.5x and down. They were able to do the wire trick and remap to higher multis.
Or you could go w/ a 2100 Tbred. It has a 13 multiplier. So you'd have 13 and up.
Read the thread from amdmb.

I read the thread at amdmb the guy had a mobo that only went up to 12.5x. Mine can go to 16x so does that mean I need the chip mod?

So your telling me any mobo can run anything up to 12.5x on sub 2000+ tbreds. After that up to 16x and down to 6x or whatever cause my 2200+ was like that. So the nforce2 claiming to unlcok the cpu is false and the tbreds is unlocked. Will test that theory tommorow when I put 2200+ into k7s5a and the 1600+ into my dads K7Turbo2 limited edition. Would be nice surpirse but I feel like Nvidia is braging about a feature they didnt make. Nothing new for them though.:t
doctj:
It means you have a newer bios. The 12.5x is the dividing line for HI and LO multipliers. If the chip is set to the low side your mobo will only see the 12.5 and down multis.
That's why I said go w/ a 2100+. In fact w/ a 15x you may get a 2400+ to work in that thing, eh?
YUP! It'll take the 2400+ and it's about the same price as the 2100. Only a little more than the 1700 DLT3C. Around $85-$90.

It's gotta be a B. Don't get a tbred A they don't oc as well.

Here's what I''m going to do: order the xp 1700 and see if it overclocks without any mods. If it doesn't I'll return it and just get an xp 2400 which is pretty cheap. I'll let you guys know my results, once again thanks for the input.
