It looks like you're building a game system. Use an AMD chip. They are cheaper and more powerful. I think most experienced PC builders would agree with me on that one. As for the GF3, go for it if you have the cash but remember what happened to the voodoo5? it went from $350 down to $90 in six months. You could probably save a lot of cash by going with a GF2Ultra/GTS or waiting for the GF3 to fall. Get only the best heatsink for your chip. That's one area where you don't want to cheap out. Make sure you buy some kind of case cooling system, bay exhaust or card exhaust.

The person I will be building the system for allready has a burner. He is still thinking of me making system for him. He wants to buy the best of the best. He never herd of a AMD so he likes the Intel better. It there any way of convincing him that the higher speed is not always the best.

The Pentium III outperforms the P4 in business applications. Instead of putting the work into making a good piece of computer hardware, Intel has relied again on marketing to consumers who think more Mhz=faster. Actually Apple's G4 500Mhz outperforms anything intel or AMD have, but Apple lacks software support and thats another story. Just to prove to you that more Mhz is not more, read any benchmarks or reviews on the P4 vs the Athlon 1.3

P4: More Mhz, More Money, Less performance. Why pay more for less?

wow P3 beats P4!!
You learn stuff every day. So i will show him some benchmarks but a lot of the benchmarks at toms hardware the P4 beats the AMD? why?

Nope never mind the 1.33 beat the 1.7 14 out of 21 benchmarks

Tom is not known for his impartiality, but in integer tests the P4 wins due to high clock speeds, but it seems to get choked up with real world tests. Which tests are you looking at? Here's an analogy for you: P4 is to the Athlon as a 600 horsepower garbage truck is to a 400 horsepower sports car. The sports car might not have the horsepower (or clock speed) but ends up being faster. Get what I'm trying to say?

Now I get it.

Wow, that's a great analogy. I'll have to use that some time. might through in that it's a budget sports car, but the one that will last forever. and the garbage truck has the inside of the dump thing covered with gold, just to make it cost more, not to mention, it's all made of plastic, and will only last, maybe a year. hehehe, ok, i think we're taking this a bit far now. the sportscar has a really pimpin' stereo too. hehehe, luckely for me, most of my costomers are gamers, or computer freaks that just haen't got the building expertise yet, so most realize that the AMD is so must better, my pay to get the intel. The intels are good, not great, but good, they will get the job done, but if your looking for the best bang for you buck, go for the AMD. AMD give you free stuff when you ask for it too. Intel won't, cheap bas...people...

$20 for a floppy drive seems high. I know its just a floppy drive but still. Bought mine for $11 http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

who really uses floppys any more? I dont even have a floppy in this system. Look on pricewatch you should be able to get an OEM floppy for like 5-10 bucks.

Yeah, may get one for 15 dollars a local store.

Definitely hold off on the Geforce3. The Geforce2Ultra/GTS's are pretty **** good compared to the 400 you pay for Geforce3. Go to Bigfootcomputers.com and check out the heatsinks and fans. I would recommend a Lian-Li or Coolmaster Aluminum case. They go for around 180 (w/o power supply) but can do wonders. Both have received RAVE reviews. Oh and definitely AMD, I love em.

I would get a Thermaltake Volcano II or Super Chrome Orb (both go for about 19-22). The next step is around 50 bucks (but Well worth it for cooling).
As for mobo's I'm having a hard time myself. Tom's seems to suggest the MSI K7T266 board (which I'm leaning towards myself) but the Asus A7A266 is pretty nice.

I would check out NCIX.com Someone else recommended it here and I can't believe how good their custom built PC prices are, and there is a lot of variety. Keep you PC balanced.

looks to make a pretty good system. Might look into getting a cdrw, they come prett cheap nowdays, and come in pretty handy, especially in a gaming system. might also toss in an Ethernet card, you never know when you'll need one, and for an extra $10, why not? i recommend the AMD system, by far, get that one. hehehe, AMD just rocks, hehehe, get some good cooling though.

BTW, that ussually a good way to see if a new store, or on-line vender has good prices - check what they sell a floppy for, if it's under 15, they are worth look into, if it's under 10, start buying stuff, if it's over 15, glace around, but don't buy, unless you find a really good deal. yeah, a lot of people don't use a floppy anymore, that's what those cd-burners are for, hehehe
