Hey,
Alot of thick layers of dust is building up inside the case of my computer and especially on the coolers/fans...
What to do?????
Is there any way of preventing it? Can it possibly harm the computer???
How can I clean it out?

get yourself a can of compressed air, open that sucker up and blow it out somewhere outside.

hint: blow the dust through the power supply out of the back of the case from the inside. this way the dust in the power supply goes out, instead of in.

Yeah, get that dust of your hardware... Dust layers on PC hardware prevents the heat from cooling off the hardware...

I just cleaned out a friends computer, I went into the basement with a white T-Shirt on, and left with it a brownish color because of all the dust inside the computer.

Of course I asked "When was the last time this was cleaned" They looked at me with funny faces, and replied "What do you mean cleaned" http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I've found that the best filter material is a thin foam for window air conditioners. It comes in rolls, is easy to cut, and is cheap to get at almost any hardware store. Plus it has almost no resistance to air flow, just dust flow. Like charmler, I clean my filters every week (Sunday afternoon).

I even covered the side intake vents on my Antec KS-282+ case, so no dust gets in that way.

If your really ghetto and/or are too lazy to go to the hardware store, just use some pantyhose as a filter. Yes thats right, pantyhose......believe it or not, it works great.

I wouldn't advise using pantyhose for filter on fans, not even "Control-top". http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif That would restrict ALOT of air flow because the mesh is so fine on them. If you;d like to get and idea how much airflow willl be restricted, try blowing an ordinary house fan to a house window screen and see where the air goes. And keep in mind that window screens aren't half as dense as pantyhose! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Just don't be lazy and clean out the dust from the case once evey couple months or so... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I don't know which is worse; me cutting up a pair of the wifes pantyhose or me breathing through them!

Either way she will think I am nuts or a perv.

You'd actually be surprised at how little air it blocks.

Try it.....

you gotta do what you gotta do...........to a point that is

You know, I'm not too sure about "Control Top", but I hear that "Sheer Energy" does wonders for filtering dust for case fans! J/K! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

G/Day,
Filters are fine, until they too, are clogged up. Adding things to a system, requires more maintenance.

Better to look at the root cause, of the dust.
Busy offices, lots of people traffic, carpeted floor, and a workstation under the desk, will fill a m/c with rubbish quickly.

Having a Server on the floor in a people traffic area is unforgivable. But it happens.

Offices that use PC's under work benches, need to know that PM's are required.

Retailers using generic PC's as POS systems are an obvious example here.

You will not find an uglier mess, than a POS system in a dress shop, or a 'cheap variety' store.

The larger chains, we have here, understand this, so we go 'toilet cleaning' [PM's].

Others wonder, how to keep the dust out?
A. You cant.

But you can employ a 'chimney sweep' to keep it clean.
It seems, you need to be a qualified Tech, to get this task.
