Yup it did just that. I had a customer who wanted a new hard disk installed in his system (a Celeron 300) and migrate some of his programs and apps to the new harddisk. He also wanted a fresh install of WinMe.
It was peculiar that a Celeron system was using OnTrack DM for a 3gig HD with 2 partitions. It was the old style DM, the ones used with P5s when the BIOSes couldn't see anything beyond 2gig. The ones that you couldn't access when one booted from a floppy.
So I proceded with the new hd as master, the old as slave. The CD drive on the sec ide channel. Popped the WinMe CD in the drive rebooted and everything went well. That is until I looked at the old hard drive. Everything was gone, all it had was WININST.400.
My guess is WinMe setup saw that there was a HD at d:, figured it was empty and decided to use it as a temp.
Grrrr.
