I dont't get as good speeds with my cable modem as my friend who lives down the street. He gets great speeds from the netscape ftp while I dont get as good. I get about 80 k /s tops while he claims he can download a 17 meg file from it in under a minute. My cable modem is setup correctly and I have a much better comp then him. What could be wrong and what should i do? I have a motorola cable modem and an smc ether ez ethernet card. If you can help please reply.

17 megs in under a minute? Hmmmmmm gimme one of those. I have a cable modem, and I thought 40 to 60 kb's/sec was outrageous. At my old 56k hookup, I averaged 4.5 to 5.5k/sec. So, when I jumped to this, I thought I was in heaven.

How much do you pay per month? If you top at 80k/sec, I can't see how you could be dissappointed at all... I think that's blistering!

But that's just my .02 worth...

Good Luck In All...

Oh yeah, you can always go to your control panel, internet options, connections, lan settings, automatically detect settings, then okay. See if that helps, but like I said, I think you're clickin' along pretty well now.

You can only get the 200KM/sec - 300KB/sec downloads off really fast servers.

ftp.pcgamer.com is one that I get good speeds off. Microsofts servers are really fast too. Try downloading from them.

Call your provider and tell them to increase the bandwith in your area, just complain untill they do it. All they do is add a card in your area..

Go to www.speedguide.net (http://www.speedguide.net) . Then you can pass your friend.
