computer starts up fine without soundblaster drivers in.

stays on for hours then goes down, get the wrong shutdown message and scandisks.

checked device manager and under others saw 3 things under the yellow question mark pci ethernet drivers, pci controller, and pci multimedia controller.

Today I unchecked them to see if machine would stay on
still goes down after few hours.

Have checked fans, blew out the dust, reinstalled windows 98 virus scanned.

Any suggestions except for tossing computer out the window?

Pull the card out of the machine and see if it behaves or try another slot for now.

It certainly sounds like the card is getting too hot and drawing too much current after a while. I would try another one or onboard sound if it has that.

http://www.aida32.hu/download/aida32pe_361.exe

Download that and install it. It will tell you everything about your hardware.

Your network card drivers, motherboard drivers and modem drivers aren't installed. Let the hunt begin!
