Ok I have been trying to thinking of a solution to this problem for about a week and keep coming up empty. If you think you might have a solution let me know. Here is the scenario.

All of the computers on the network have a computer ID that is made up of the CPU type, the CPU speed, HD size, amount of RAM, and the last 3 digits of the IP. So a Pentium III 500Mhz, with a HD size of 6.4Gb, 256 Mb Ram, and an IP address of xxx.xxx.xxx.100 would look like this P305006400256100. OK now there is a folder that has the same number on it that contains all of the programs that are installed on that computer along with any license that are needed. OK great easy tracking. So now we have a database that contains the all of the IP;s of the computers for easy setup of new computers. This database is broken down to diff departments. Where MIS might have IP's xxx.xxx.xxx.100 - xxx.xxx.xxx.125 but if a computer where to move from this workroup how can we do this with out changing the folders and the tags that are on the computers.

I have not been able to come up with a scheme that will enable us to easily move a computer from one workgroup to another with out hveing to change all of the folders and stickers.

If you have and suggestions throw them this way. I am at my wits end and have one heck of a headache form thinking of the solution to this problem.

Thanks

Maybe I'm missing something, but why not just use the host or NetBIOS name since they have to be unique, and they will stay the same regardless of where they land on the network.

Then tie the IP address to the NetBIOS and/or host name (otherwise known as WINS and DNS), and away you go.

If the person that has the computer would leave then the ID would change. If the computer were to change departments than the ID would change. We need to keep it the same if there is any king of move. This is for inventory and auditing by the accounting department.

After some discussion we might be changing our whole computer id scheme to go with an assest tag. This means more work for me know but less work in the future.

Job security gotta love it.
