I'll have it set up and it will print to the network printer just fine-now it won't work. checked the IP address in the printers properties- if this is a dynamic IP would that cause the problem? my computer thinks its printing to the printer (no error message) but it does not go through. can I change the HP DirectJet to assign a static IP (how do I tell if its static or dynamic?).
thanks P

I added a port to the same IP in the printers properties box; it works. the difference is the new one has 'SNMP Status' enabled and the old one didn't. what does SNMP status enabled mean? also has community name as 'public' and device index as '1'. do these need to be changed? I disabled SNMP on the new port that I created and it works-so I'm confused why it didn't work in the first place.

you should set a static IP for any print server. This is just good networking policy.

Simple Network Management Protocol. SNMP is use to monitor the network using SMNP agents. This is the protocol that can send warning messages, etc. You can just take the defaults.
