Hello all

I was having a dilema

http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=140926 where my HardDrive was being reported incorrectly

I found out the problem was two pins had become bent and was contacting each other that caused a short in my harddrive ( pins 1 and 40 ) was contacting each other

Well I ran many utilities. Partition Magic saw the drive as Two partitions, Partition 1 = 121 megs Formatted ( FAT 16 ) and Partition 2 as unformatted

Well with Ontrack Easy Recovery, I see Partition 1 = 18. MB Unidentified , Partition 2 = 74 GIG FAT32 ( pic below ) , after proceeding I was able to SEE most of the files, and have the option to RECOVER them . ( some files were Deleted )

I would like to know, whats the best UTILITY to FIX the PARTITION without LOSING the data on it, I KNOW I can BACKUP=Recover to another drive, but my HardDrive has over 65 Gigs of files and I just don't have a backup/second drive available that large to save everything, so I would like to REPAIR the partition on the 80 Gig drive ( for NOW at least ) . Is this possible ?

I've had a serious migraine headache since this problem started so I maybe dazed and missed those options in Ontrack EasyRecovery or Partition Magic

Which software is the best to repair BAD partition without losing the data ?

thanks in advance

some system specs

Drive 1: 20 Gig Maxtor as Nmaster Partition = 2
Part 1 = Windows98SE
Part 2 = Windows2000

Drive 2: 80 Gig WD

Drive 3: 80 Gig Maxtor ( problem drive now )

Drive 4: 120 Gig WD

Intel P4 2.0 Ghz CPU

MSI MOBO

No CD/RW as I have to SWAP when I need to because I only have IDE for 4 drives :(

That software should be able to recover the partition, take a break and read the help files later plus check there online support and faq's.

It's not as easy as Ontrack, but it's good.

Hello again tech fam

I used Partition Magic to DELETE the small partition

then I was left with the LARGER partition

I used OntrackDataRecovery and saved what I could
I just REFORMATTED the entire drive and do a fresh install of Windows on it...

Now come another DILEMA ..

I COPIED my 20 GIG Harddrive files ( D drive and C drive windows2000 and windows 98 files over to the now 80 Gig harddrive ) I reformatted the 20 GIG ( all files are gone ) ... now heres my problem

The USERS and FILES that was under the Document and Settings on the 20 Gig Windows2000 was PASSWORD Protected, how do I get back the files on the new harddrive ? .. when I click the folder and click PROPERTIES, its showing 0 files .. but I know the files are there because I see the Users Folders but can't see the FILES within them ( FOLDERS that were PASSWORD Protected )

This is some SPECIAL IMPORT issues I failed to run ?

do I need some special software to do this now ?

is this a LOST CAUSE ?

Thanks in advance

don't use w2k much - how did you copy over those files - I've never seen password protected files disappear in a directory like that?

and if you reformat the 20 gig before making sure you had everything yes, it might be a lost cause?

and I know you're upset, but red's a little tough to read ;)

I would say make new folders with the same name , then password protect them, with the same password, then copy and paste the old folder to replace the new folder. Just a thought.:t

I'm back,, problem still NOT SOLVED, I havent been able to access my files still :(

I used FILE-n-SYNC ( a synchronize/backup program ) when I was copying files from 1 HD to other harddrive.

Someone please tell me how to SEE the files I copied . help :(

do I need to find some type of HACKING or cracking software or hidden file viewer to resolve this ?

Ohno Use Drive Image by PowerQuest to image the partition containing the password protect folders. One of the features of the full version of Drive Image is to extract folders and files from the created .pqi file much in the same manner file recovery programs recover deleted data.

In experimentation with XP, I didn't have to recover the files themsleves. I was able to extract entire other administrators' password protected FOLDERS intact. When such folders were extracted, they were not password protected.

Drive Image by PowerQuest can be immediately downloaded for a 30 day evaluation period!
