What brand do you guys recommend for home networking.

and also would you choose the 802.11a or the 802.11b?

we have 2 computers and one computer will be upstairs, while the other one will be downstairs, they will not be directly above each other.

they will be in almost opposite corners of the house, we just want to share broadband, play LAN games, filesharing, and printer sharing.

if you can help thanks :D

General Wireless info.

802.11a = aka Water under the Bridge for Home users.
802.11b = 11Mb/sec. Network "Speed" (Carrier transmission 2.4GHz)
802.11g = 55Mb/sec. Network "Speed" (Carrier transmission 2.4GHz)

Wireless Ethernet needs additional protocol over head for the transfer. In addition, it is not as stable as Wired so it needs extra processing procedures.

As a result the 11Mb/sec. “speed” of the Network chipset is translated to a much lower actual performance. Usually 4-6Mb/sec.

Few 802.11b hardware units are also capable to work at 22Mb/sec. it is nice, but in real term will yield only 20% more than 11Mb/sec. systems.

The 802.11g line that is rated 55Mb/sec. yields 18-22Mb/sec.

JackMDS? Gotta be you. Same kinda dialogue, same flood links methodology and the same semi-accurate information. Why the name change?

LMAO - "semi-accurate information" That's a good one!

Yeah, stuff like PBCC (802.11b+) only yields a 20% throughput increase. G is rated at 55 Mb instead of the technically accurate 54 Mb. "Wireless Ethernet needs additional protocol over head for the transfer." The bulk of the hit on wireless is the same reason hubs are not very efficient CSMA/CA. Nothing to do with wireless as a technology. Stuff like that. Vintage JackMDS. <shrug> May not be him though.
