Hi
I set up a Windows 98SE dial up server. It is set to tcp/ip and PPP. I can connect with a Windows 98SE dial up client, but I am unable to connect with a Win2000 Pro client by dial-up. When I try to connect, I get the message that the user and password cannot be verified on this domain.
I am not terribly familiar with setting up this type of network, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks.

The user logged on to the Win2K PC must be the same as the user on Win98. In other words, Win98 must "recognize" the user. This is where Win98 stinks - you can't have multiple users with different permissions.

Hi Bill
I see you are in Missouri City. I'm in Clear Lake.
Thanks for the reply. On the win98 dial up server, I previously added a new user that is the same name as the user on the win2000 machine but with a password added, but on the win2000 user, I don't have a password set up- it is a stand alone computer not connected to a LAN. It still is not recognized.
How should I set up the win98 server user so that I can dial in and it will be recognized? Should the user name that is common to the 2 machines also not have a password on the server?

thanks,

Tom

If the Win2K user has no password, so must the user that was added to Win98.

Here's some links for you:

Frankly, Win2K makes a better Dial-up Server.

Funny - I'm going down to Clear Lake today to work on a friend's PC.

Thanks Bill
I will give that a try later this morning and let you know. I also suggest that your friend take you to lunch either at Carlos Beer Garden on Highway 3 near Nasa Rd. 1 (great burgers) or Pe-te's on Highway 3 across from Ellington field- great cajun.

Well, don't try the Texas Land and Cattle on I-45 near the beltway- the roof collapsed on some old folks the other day.

I tried setting the user and password on the server the same as on the win2000 client- still same message- the user and password failed authentication on the network domain. Any other ideas as to how my system is set up that it is not being recognized? Once again, I can log in just fine from a win98 client

thanks

Make sure that your connectoid in WIn2K is using the same security protocols and settings as Win98.

Well, I have tried everything. I have made sure that the user and password is the same on both machines. Both use tcp/ip and PPP. Both have Client for Microsoft Networks. The security settings seem to be the same. Both machines have the same workgroup. I am still getting the same message that the user and password cannot be authenticated on the network domain.

any ideas?
