I have a really annoying problem with my modem so can someone help me fix it.

I have a Mitsubishi Diamond Voice SE modem with the latest Mitsubishi drivers and can hardly ever get a 50.6kbps connections on Windows XP.

I bought this modem off a friend and he used to always get 50.6kbs connections everytime and he was even using a similar setup using a 15m cable on the same ISP as me.

I normally get 44.0kbps and sometimes less than that and I wouldn't mind, but when I get 44.0kbps or less the internet goes totally slow:( The two times I have connected at 50.6kbps, in the few months I have had this modem, the speed on the internet has been good.

I have formatted and reinstalled Windows XP, checked for spyware and viruses and tried a number of other different things but I keep getting really bad connection speeds.

Could someone please give me some suggestions so I can solve this problem and get 50.6Kbps connections on Windows XP.

By the way my computer setup is:
AMD Duron 1200MHz CPU
256 SDRAM
Radeon 9000 64DDR RAM Video Card

Thanks,
Michael

PS: I would get a faster internet connection but my house is in the worst position where ADSL isn't available and cable is too expensive and has a really bad download limit.

LOL Lately it seems that formatting Hard Drives is the Snake Oil of Networking.

You can try another ISP phone number (if you have choice).

You can try to get a spare Modem ($0-$10 expense in the US), and try it.

If you get the same result it is probably line degradation or and decaying ISP.

Don’t know about the world under, but in the US DialUp is slowly on is way out, and systems decay with no further investment.

Have the phone company "clean" the line of noise.

Replace the phone lines in the house.

Replace the phone cord from the wall to the modem.

Check with the ISP what speeds they support.

If all this fails, upgrade to a cable modem!

Dial up connections are slow. It s***s, bt no way I would have clean installed windows because of that. I used to get way slower connections speeds than that.

Yeah here in the UK certain BT areas have a shared old type of network for the telephones so it means the max anyone on the area will get is 33.6kbps - my folks arent too impressed and of course cable arent laying any more due to their massive debts - IE NTL so my folks are stuck in the modem stone-age with no way out.
