The domain server is gone. I logged on as a local administrator and was trying to join a workgroup (and disjoin the domain at the same time.) I just got an error that it couldn't find server to disjoin. Is there a way around that?

To disjoin a Windows 2000 client computer from the network

Note These steps will have to be done for Windows 2000 Professional client computers and Windows 2000 member servers.

-Right-click My Computer, and then select Properties.
-From the Network Identification tab, click Properties.
-Remove the computer from the domain by selecting the Workgroup button option and using "Workgroup" as the workgroup name.
-After disjoining the domain, shut down the client computer before reconnecting it to the new domain.

um yeah I already tried that. That is what the problem is.

I get this error:

The following error occurred attempting to unjoin the domain "RAFL":

The revision level is unknown.

Google:

Apparently, only a domain-level Administrator can disjoin the client.

That could be difficult considering the domain doesnt exist anymore.

Perhaps there is a registry entry or way to change it with some linux tools.

You have two choices:

1. Contact the old domain admin and ask his username/password or ask him to do it.

2. Reinstall Win2K. Just install to the same location. All personal data can be found in your old profile.

There's no other way.

I think option number 2 is the only viable solution. Unless this disk i have to reset nt password works for domain admins as well as local admins. Frankly, I think I'll just leave the computer if I can't change it. So they won't be in the workgroup--it shouldn't matter much. Thanks for the help though.

If my only option is to reinstall, must i have the cd or can it be done with a different source (such as service pack)?

Thanks!

What will a service pack do? It does not contain the files need to reinstall Windows.

Only a real Windows CD can install Windows.
