We use an external company to host our website. This provider is outside our domain. Say our website is HTTP://burgerp.com. Everyone outside our Domain can access the website. We get a error saying that the name can not be resolved. Our domain name is burgerp.com.
I believe the DNS servers think the website is local and try to resolve it locally. I think I must make an entry into the DNS server to point to the external webserver but do not know how.
Please help.

Exactely, that's why
noticed they didn't use WWW in front
so obviously the DNS server is giving them back the Internal address
but if instead
they setup www.burgerp.com then when they type in HTTP://www.burgerp.com internally
will be able to reach the outside world at HTTP://burgerp.com

My query was wrong. We do put in the url as http://www.burgerp.com and are not able to connect. I asked the people on site to do the nslookup and tracert tests and will give feedback. It is all 2000 servers.
Thanks.

yes at the moment you do have a problem with the ISP place that is hosting your website
they are not Up, or the DNS is not working
ask them if they have Updated your DNS

your Domain name is NOT even registered
have you done all the paper work with Interic or any other name registrars already?

The www part of a web address is a different registration - most websites need two but I presume you know that ALLG.
Its called a CNAME or ALIAS if I remember my DNS allocation parameters.
The most popular use the CNAME-record type is to provide access to a web-server using both the standard "www.domain.com" and "domain.com" (without the www).
This is usually done by creating an A-record for the short name (without www), and a CNAME-record for the www name pointing to the short name.
Sounds like burgerboy hasnt done his homework - tsk tsk...
Virtual smack on the botty comming your way..........................................smaaa aaaaaaaaccccckkkk!!!!!!

What I say and what I think I say is not always the same. On my first query I said that " say my website is www.burgerp.com" The correct website is www.telecom.co.ls and the domain telecom.co.ls. Sorry for the confusion. I think I can solve the problem with entries in cname and with a alias as mentioned but would like to know how.the external site provider's IP is 196.25.228.74.
Thanks.

Sorry I must have confused ALLG (Easily done):p :t
When I stuck in www.burgerp.com etc I was only using it as an example as I gathered that wasnt your real address thats why I said Need more info - IE The real web address.
ALLG just made an assumption , easily done after x,000 posts.
So what is the state of play - you need to get your DNS to synchronize with the internet dns root servers - Remove the dot prefix from your DNS registration table and make sure your DNS is set to look on the net for the dns info!
Alternatively you could set it up statically using the above mentioned CNAME etc.
Hope yer virtual botty isnt too sore after that smack burgerman!

Your website is down - it resolves via dns ok
But the gateway at 196.25.228.70 (CAPETOWN I BELIEVE - PERHAPS LESOTHO TOWN) is as far as it gets - looks like your web server is off!!!

I would also advise you to deny vty lines 0-5 to your cisco router at 196.25.228.69 and apply patches to the IOS.
Mind you it is africa - probably running on a gerbil wheel!!!
