I've had a network between two computers in my house. One has win98se and the other has xp pro. I used to have a successful network between the two computers. A while back it stopped working. Last night I got the win xp computer to share it's cable internet access with the win98 computer. I have run the windows home networking wizard on both computers. They are both in the same workgroup. Both computers can only see themself on the network. What could be causing this?

Have you installed McAfee or Trend Micro AV? How about a firewall?

if you installed a firewall, you must set it so it can trust that other comp.

I've got zonealarm and sygate firewall both running. Usually when a computer tries to make a connection to me, both firewalls will ask me if I want to accept the connection. That hasn't happend though. I will go ahead and add the win98 computer to my "trust" list anyway.

I'm using a linksys 1mbit phoneline networking card for my network. The internet computer is on 192.168.0.1, and the win98 computer is on 192.168.0.2.
Um... just as I'm typing this, I tried to look in my workgroup, and I can see the other computer now, But now this computer can't see itself.
edit: The network is moving extremely slow. It takes about 10 seconds just to view a shared folder on the other computer.
edit again: Now the internet computer can see itself AND the other computer, and it's all running at normal speeds.

I blame that network card. Those phone line cards really don't do any good.

Have you tried installing NetBEUI on both machines?
