Win 2000 Pro
ADSL connection

I'm stumped. My customers PC has been fiddled with! and neither IE or Netscape will access the net. With IE we just get page cannot be found and with Netscape we get server not found. (Outlook Express the same)

The ADSL connection is good because we have pinged the ISP server and all is ok, and the the software is showing a good connection also, but we cannot use it.

I suspect that a registry setting has been changed to disable internet access.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Open up Internet Explorer Properties and look at it's connections tab. Click on the Lan Settings. Make sure that the "Automatically Detect Settings" is not checked. Try it now.

If it's still timing out, and you have an nForce2 motherboard. Check out my sticky on top of the forum. Also it will be a good thing to speed up the lan browsing if it's going to be networked. To do this just check out BiPolarBill's sticky below mine's

Just a shot in the dark. You may want to check out the Advanced tab under the TCP/IP properites. Make sure that none of the filters are restricting the proper ports needed.

Not really sure if it applies but worth a shot.

The old manual firewall action. Not too many people know about that. That's basically what the xp firewall option is doing.

It sounds like a dns issue. try connecting to a website using its IP address. I usually use something like hotmail 64.4.52.7

Are there any firewall programs running? did you try running adaware or spybot?

Can you ping the DNS server?
Do you have a firewall blocking Generic Host Services or Services and Controller App?
Is the DNS server listed in IPCONFIG?

on that note, try running ipconfig /flushdns
