Ello.
I'm thinking about getting ADSL broadband into my parents house (long decision - how long will I be living here, how much will I use it, is it worth £15 a month (i.e. my parents pay £15, I pay £15)...) anyway, one of the things I am going to do is install a network into the house, just for fun ;)

I'm planning on running a cat5 cable down the stairs and replace the phone lines as I go so thats the first question - does anyone know where I can get wiring diagrams? I know how to wire a cat 5 plug (hence a socket) but no ideas on phone line implementation.

Second, if I decide to get broadband (v. likely) who makes decent & cheap modems? I already have a Netgear FS108 switch (bought ages ago) and plan to use that as the network hub and run the modem off it...

Thanks for the thoughts...

Stefan

One of my favorite urls - I used it to wire up my house too.

Rather good.

Dont use usb - ethernet is far more reliable!!!

Dont use DSL so cant recommend a modem - Alcatel are theonly ones Ive used and they seem ok.

get an ethernet modem. you will have a much easier time finding a router if you want one. I noticed that you mentioned sharing via a switch. I would really recommend you get a router instead.

Go ask a spoty teenager @ PCWORLD ;)

Phone wiring is fairly 'git proof ' :p either 2 or four wires, pending. Just keep an eye on your REN's (Ring Equivelent No's) Its 4 with BT.......

I went USB with my Broadband.......... Works fine :)
