I just went out today and spent 100 bucks (Canadian) on a U.S Robotics External Faxmodem V.92 and I installed the software got the updates for XP and everything plugged it all in and no dial tone..i went throught the trouble shooting in the guide I called my Phone company to make sure I am using an Analog phone line and i went on the site and went through the trouble shooting there..everything is plugged in and my software is up to date and i have the requirements to use the modem but i still get no dial tone, my internal modem works fine but it is a winmodem which runs off software and lags more i am very into online gaming so a bit of difference means a lot i have been told these external us robotics V.92's are a great improvement...if i can ever get it to work that is anyone got any suggestions?

External modems are the best - Is your CD light on the modem on? Carrier Detect (CD) - It detects if the line is ready to use.

Go into modems in control panel and execute a modem diagnostic test to make sure your hardware is ok.

What com port is it on and is the com port enabled in your bios?
What operating system - need more info!

There's an easy way to test

behind the modem there are 2 ports

make sure the line from the Wall is connected to the RJ-11 with the wall plug picture

and then you can connect a normal phone on the 2nd jack RJ-11 with a phone picture

now if you can hear a tone on the real phone, then the modem should have Tone also

:t

Make sure in the BIOS you have Com 1 and Com 2 ENABLED

also REMOVE your internal PCI modem card

that will CONFLICT with your external modem

how do i make sure com 1 and 2 are enabeled in bios and i have to take apart the back of my computer and remove my pci card...that sounds hard lol..i know its plugged into the right slot in the back and i did put a phone to the other one and i do hear a tone i guess i will take the tower off and look around for a modem card then =/

usually you go into the BIOS by hitting the [DEL] button

when you restart the computer

then inside usually you have the mobo build in features
or if not usually inside the plug and play options

just unscrew the old modem
and take it out
WinXP will take care of it automatically

Test the dial-tone with a phone first please. Try moving the line to the other jack in the back of the modem if it passes the phone test.

Serial modems are funny. You can install the drivers even if they are not plugged in. Depending on the PC brand, press DEL, F1, F2, F10 or F11 to enter BIOS setup and enable the Com/serial port.

AllGamer

Ok, so Does the PHONE a normal phone gets dial tone or not?

if it passed the modem TESTs then you should get Tone

try turning up the volume

also you can use

ATL3

Auto works or set it to disabled first and press the + key once for the first selection.

Count Lagalot
07-06-2003, 10:55 AM
there is no auto and i set it to disabeled and pressed + once and it went to the one that it has always been on which means it was right but i tried the modem again anyway and still no dial tone, then i switch over to dialing on my win modem and i hear dial tone, this makes no sense blah

Might be bad-exchange it quick! I had mine (same exact modem) blow the powerpack from just being plugged in ALL the time. Well same thing you got. Oh my lights come on etc. But no dial tone deal. Then I shook the power pack curiously-rattle, rattle. Uh-there is the problem. Seems it was getting power-but not enuff. And like a underpowered psu for pc-it would hang it up soon as you tried for dialing. Now I still have to find a replacement cause its a weird one volts wise and its ac too not dc like most ! It has anotyher transformer in side obviously and turns to dc there. USR support sucks-been 6 months 3 emails and still no reply. Bought the most $ dial up modem you can get and it got me nowhere. So alas Im still suing a softmodem hunk 'o junk. With a $100+ beut. just sitting on desk looking real stupid.;)

Are you sure you did the diagnostic test to the right modem???
I would remove the winmodem inside the pc first!!!

You really need to give us more info - what port is it running on?
Is that port enabled in the bios - it needs to be com port 1 or more usually 2!!!!

Ive seen this on another forum and the only way the guy fixed it was a complete reinstall!!!

Count Lagalot
07-06-2003, 08:09 PM
i removed the modem and it still didnt work thus i had to put it back in to get here it is running on com port 4 because 1 and 2 are in use from what i dont know and the win modem is running on com port 3

omendata
07-06-2003, 08:15 PM
Then that is what your problem is.
You need to use com2.

Com1 & 3 share the same interrupt as do COM2 and COM4.

You will have to sort out what is using which and check which port your modem is plugged into - it should tell you on the back 1 or 2.

Then enable the correct port in the bios - check it in system settings and make sure its properties are ok.

what i really need is someone with icq or ym or aim to go on there and talk to them i think it would go a lot better like that i added you omen but you arent online, i will say everything i know right now...my phone line is working properly and is analog for sure so its not the phone line. there is no power adapter this is the new model there is only a usb plug in a place for the modem jack in the back and another line for the phone its in the right jack in the back i know that for sure, the software is correclty installed because the lights on the modem are working when i click connect i hear a sound the same i hear on the win modem before the dialtone kicks in only after that sound there is nothing, i tried added x3 to the init string and it dialed but no dial tone so it just hung there till it ran out of time i have restored my computer to a prevous date and preformed a complete reinstall of all the software i have removed my win modem and did a reinstall i have made sure com/serial port is on the right one, in my device manager it only lists com port 1 and printer port 1 under ports it says where you choose the com port for your modem that 1 and 2 are already in use..3 is what the win modem is using and 4 is what the external modem is using, in the diagnostics there is only the query modem button which comes up with a bunch of init strings most give a response and are succesful..i took the modem down to a friends plugged it in installed software and dialed up right away same computer brand name same isp if you need anymore info i need to talk to you on a instant messenger so you can tell me how to get it if possible..

Right so you are now saying the modem is a usb modem - its not a conventional modem.

You will then need to make sure your usb is enabled in the bios and enables in system properties - usb modems are notoriously tricky to troubleshoot when they go haywire which is often!!!

Firstly what is the make and model of the modem!!!

You will still need to remove the old modem to get this one working as the USB type may claim com4!!!

BipolarBill
07-06-2003, 08:53 PM
A USB modem - that figures.

The "cure" is to take the sucker back. USB modems lag more than serial ones and are not dependable at all.

U.S Robotics 56k USB Faxmodem V.92....tried on com port 1 2 3 and 4 all the same maybe i should just take it back are there other external robotics modems that you can get without usb? the only options under I/O configurations are for com port 1 which is enabeled on the right setting and then parallel port and then some setting with EPP or ECP or ECP+EPP and thats it aside from a size setting 1 or 3 and thats on 3

BipolarBill

Nothing you change in BIOS can fix that thing. USB is not configurable. It's on or off, works or doesn't. When people speak highly of USR modems, they are not speaking of the USB versions. They mean the (expensive) serial ones.

Take it back. I know USB and I would never use it for networking.

Thats what I meant - In MY bios I have USB device - enable/disable.

Maybe his is disabled which means his usb root hubs and controller will not show up in device manager and hence snafu modem!!!

Do you have any other usb devices on your pc!!!
Check your device manager for your usb hubs!!!

As Bill and I have said USB sucks for modems of all kinds be it cable , dsl or standard!!!

HP pavilions are nice machines - nice case and solid build from the one or two ive seen!!! Good ole HP and their servers too!!!

You have biggo problems then!!!

The modem isnt stuffed so Im at a bit of a loss here I must admit!!!

What lights are on the modem when you plug it in!!!

Can you paste the output of your modem test here!!!

Sounds like the modem just wont play ball - try removing all other usb devices - it may be sucking too much power!!!

Thats a problem line - looks like the modem isnt getting enough power - did you pull out all other usb devices?

If it was me and it was getting to this stage Id stick in another hard disk - do a clean install of xp etc and test it just to make sure but i think it must be your Hardware or your OS.

Are you running WINDOWS XP?

Establish a connection to the modem from hyperterminal!

Do you know how to use direct AT COMMANDS?

Then type AT&S0

That will force the DSR line high - then try a dialout!!!

Im afraid this is going to get more complex!!!
Have you installed the correct driver for the modem from the cd - dont rely on XP to get it working for you - just cos it says its there dont mean the startup sequence is gonna work - get the latest drivers from the web!!!
Well this is my 1000th post so we'd better get a fix on this one - try the following.

Make sure you are using the phone cable that came with the modem - did you try the one you used on your other modem - the USR one may be faulty.

You may have a non standard dialtone.

try this:

Open HyperTerminal.
HyperTerminal is accessible by selecting Start, Programs, Accessories, Communications, and HyperTerminal.

Select Cancel at the new connection dialog box to open the Terminal window.
Type AT and press Enter. You may not see the letters, which is fine.
The modem should respond with an OK message. If you did not see the letters A and T as you typed them, type ATE1 and press Enter. You should now see the AT commands as you type them, in addition to the responses.
Type ATDT and press Enter.
If the modem comes back with a No Dial Tone message, type ATX3DT18473304569 (or a local ISP or BBS number) and press Enter.
Note: The number in the command code is the actual number to be dialed so stick your ISP number in there!!!

If the modem dials out instead of coming back with a No Dial Tone message, you have a non-standard dial tone. At this point you should either have your phone line checked or try adding X3 to the Extra Settings field. Access Extra Settings for help locating the Extra Settings field specific to your operating system.
If the modem doesn't attempt to connect and it comes back with a No Carrier message, the issue may not be phone line related.
Closing the window to end your HyperTerminal session.
Select No when the Are you sure you want to disconnect? message appears.
Select Yes when the Are you sure you want to save this session? message appears.

Right thats the lot - I am 100% confident you will be ok!!!
So says he with a confident grin - "And you cant beat a confident man"

correct me if im wrong but if it was running two wires and modem comunication is 4 only then wouldnt it not connect using my lucent winmodem too? it did try to dial out and dialed the number then a min later it said no carrier, it could be my phone line though but im not sure how i would get that fixed what or what i would say to the tech

the hyperterminal says no dial tone and dials out which means i guess my phone line isnt normal so does this mean it would do that same on a serial external because if so i wont bother exchanging this usb for a serial i will just get my money back and buy a internal or maybe none at all and stick with the winmodem
