Can someone recommend me an internal pci v.92 modem? I have really bad phone lines. Right now I'm using a diamond supramax, but they are no longer supporting them with drivers. Are the modems with Intel chipsets better, and are there any winmodems out there with jumpers on them to set IRQ's?
Thanks,
Mick

BTW: internal are cheaper, but you'll mostlikely to get trouble with ANY brand internal modems

The USR Performance Pro is awesome:

IRQs have not been a problem since Windows 95. It's time to get over that.
Intel "Ambient" softmodems are good, but no better than that Diamond. As a matter of fact, neither is the Performance Pro! Diamond made great modems.
Thanks, I have been watching for the usr performance pro and have never, never, never, never seen it on sale or with a rebate. I know external is best, but out of desk space.:)

Hayes are still going - dont know if the build is the same or the quality - think its zoom that own them.
The speakerphone 56k was hard to beat - even has an upgradeable chip v90.
The isp I was using went out of business so I'm test driving 2 new isp's. The one that seems to be the best said they have had trouble with Diamond modems and he wants to sell me an Agere modem with a Lucent chipset for $20. My Diamond has a Conexant chip. Any thoughts on which is the better chipset? I noticed that Zoom used Lucent on their internal modems. Thanks

I had a lucent modem before, the best there was. It was VOice/Data V90 but it was an ISA modem. Man that modem was good.
I sold it because I got dsl :D

In my humble opinion Conexant has always been less efficient - Lucent all the way!!!
I always swear by Hayes modems - after all they invented the modem CHIPSET AND at COMMAND SET.

I had a conexant modem, very loyal to me
teamed it with a lucent to shotgun a connection :)
Excuse my dumbness, but how do you "shotgun" a connection?
Just wanted to add, I checked the local Best Buy for the usr performance pro internal, the girl saw me looking at the last one in a dusty box, she checked the computer for me and confirmed, they have never had it on sale. USR knows they don't need to. Also I have read people are having troubles with WinXP and V.92 with that modem. My new isp is fully V.92 compliant and the connect time is ALOT faster, if my phone company ever gets around to getting me call waiting I would like to use the modem on hold feature too.

If you have any doubt, get a Lucent-based V.92 modem.
Updated: Well I bought the cheap generic, man this thing is as generic as it gets, it says Apollo on the box, but as far as I can find, Apollo only make video cards. Time will tell how reliable it is, but I am connecting faster than I ever have. My downloads went from 3KB\sec to 4.5! I read somewhere that Lucent chips work best with AMD processors. Maybe my next modem will be an external, but right now I don't see any need. It only identifies itself as Agere Systems Soft Modem Ver. 2.0.2. Hope this helps someone else, and thanks for all your suggestion!
P.S If anyone knows who makes Apollo modem, please let me know, I can't even find an FCC ID on this thing.

Caution: Wanted to add some are having trouble with this modem if they previously had a USR modem installed, but for me outside a stick of ram this was the easiest hardware I've ever intalled.

Lucent makes apollo
I think Agere systems bought the apollo name
What model number is the chipset?
or the fcc id?
http://www.agere.com/support/download.html
http://www.modem-help.co.uk/chips/lucmar.html
The main chip is:
Agere
SV92P-T00
SV5 0206S
5049325
00 Agere
The other relavant chip is:
02D6T
6314174
1034C
MOD# on box is M71-APO02-130
MOD# on quick start guide is M73-APO02-460
When I click on modem, "More Info", ATI 5 reads, 2.0.2, PCI, Mercury, 19. Also the name: Montblanc came up somewhere. I thinks this is a very common chipset, just curious who built it, probably oem for somebody. www.dealsonic.com has a picture of the box, part # DSLU56KPCI, but their picture of the card is slightly different. I think the one I have is a couple years old. I tried every # I could find on FCC search, but nothing.
